/~maxserve/ - How did this diectory get onto my site??

Just been looking through the AWStats for one of my sites and found this entry on pages visited

/~maxserve/www.hsbc.co.uk/1.php

Does anyone know what the heck this is - because I certainly haven't built a folder like that on the site?????

Notify your host about this folder. Chances are that someone is using your FTP to share files but I could be wrong.

If you're looking in awstats, is it an actual folder on your site or is it just in the logs as someone tried to get there? Check your FTP. If it exists there, you may have been compromised. If it doesn't, it was someone trying to go to that folder on your site but it doesn't exist so it doesn't matter. Like, I can go to www.mydomain/aiufdhaio/asdasiduh and it will show up in the logs but it doesn't mean I'm going to find anything.

      SIrago,

It shows up in the AWstats but not in my ftp - so I had assumed it was okay but then I wondered - what sort of properties would the ~ introduce to a folder. Thought process being, who the heck types that in when looking for a URL except someone who specifically knows about it!

So I suppose my question would be better phrased as ' does a ~ make a folder invisible to ftp? or something similar?
