Affiliate Marketing Business Plan - ? Newbie level ?

Hiya..

Trying to get a foothold in Affiliate Marketing now I've bagged my first few sales by Bumming it. I now realise that it's possible (sounds stupid but you kinda got to prove it to yourself first).

So I'm not just in it for a laugh and because I like the look of the internet. I'd like to make an income to supplement and hopefully replace my own. Earn more, work less (if it's possible).

Last night I stayed up late to put together a plan so that I don't just write articles randomly for random niches in the hope of getting somewhere.

Just 'putting it out there' to see if others do something similar, have tips or if it helps others... who knows until I hit the 'post button'. Enough rambling, let's get on with it...

Set Goals
---------
1. Get $500 slush fund money from Bum Marketing to build experience and test different niche & make my attempts 'free' (except for time)

2. Set up freebie blog & get organic traffic to it for a niche (affiliate income)

3. Build my own affiliate websites on the niches that prove successful

4. Create my own product & get it live

As I near the end of each goal it will develop (ie. create a complementary suite of products, one time offers & back end type stuff).

Time Frames
-----------
1 & 2 in one month
3 & 4 by Christmas

How do I achieve this?
----------------------
1. At the moment I know I can get an average of 140 views in one month with an article and a CTR of 22%. That's 31 views of my blog/lander. I have roughly a 23% CTR to the affiliate site which is only 7 people. This is where my numbers are a little weaker and hard to accurately work out.

So if a product converts 1:30 hops and the affiliate pays $15 I need 34 sales to hit $500. I need 4.2 articles to generate sufficient hops for one sale which makes 142 articles to generate $500 dollars. Thats roughly 5.5 articles a day if I take Sunday off. These stats suck, I need to get better conversions! : ) In my defence my figures are newish so not entirely large enough to make statistically sound but it highlights a problem!!

2. Goal of 1 month to rank on page 1 of Google for half decent keywords in niche with a view to getting 200 a day. Careful & basic use of SEO for the blog, back links from web 2.0 stuff, forums etc (think 30DC strategy).

3. Dependent on the results of no.1 as to what is and isn't working however I will use methods described by Chris Surfrider (because it makes sense to me)

4. I have a product in mind from a past-time of mine but I need to make sure the demand is there first. I made the classic mistake of creating the product several months ago because "I thought there was demand" but now I know I need to do some research and restructure it to make sure it sells.

I will do this by checking out keyword search volumes as they indicate interest and also various forums, websites & the online competition to make sure I 'target the right solutions'.

Ok your turn!! This is a bit random but does get you thinking about really making this a business.

Feedback or thoughts & comments always welcome

Ta

PS. I know I should roll with a website from day 1 but I'm very stubborn & want to hit that $500 mark first.

    Hey Big Al

Sounds like a good plan you have going there! I too started out with bum marketing, using only free blogs at Blogger and writing 4 or 5 articles per day. I made $600 my first month, which was the first money I ever made online - pretty cool to me!

I now have a full-blown website related to work at home opportunities, and I have each page of my site tightly focused on separated keywords so that I can optimize each page of my site well. I still write tons of articles, build Hubpages, Squidoo lenses, etc. for some good traffic. My site has only been up about 7 weeks, and I average around 70 to 80 unique visitors per day.

I think your plan sounds great - do whatever works! I am also working on building my list, and have a couple of my own products in the works.

    Good luck!

    Hiya Big Al,

Great post and it's also great you're taking action in such an organised and positive way.

As you say 'niches that prove successful' is indeed key... I reckon going for what has proven to make money, big markets with lots of buyers, is a definate way to succeed without trying to reinvent the wheel.

In my experience what matters is getting targeted traffic to hungry buyers. There are loads of ways to get that traffic.. article marketing, social bookmarking, google adwords, using blogs, setting up a squidoo lens or a hub on hubpages. There's loads of freely available information here.

      Hi Ta,

Great post on that and I believe you have your battle plan laid out. It is going to keep you busy for the next few months.

I am impressed you have the Maths all done up such as how many views, CTR rate and so on.

Very few newbies are so specific at this. Even I was not when I was new then.

Anyway, I am sure you can only smell success if you proceed as plan.

Just maintain your plan and fine tune it as you go along. =)

Good luck! (And I dont think you are a newbie or this is a newbie level plan. You are already a few steps ahead. )

      Cheers,
      John

TA, something I see you are missing is building your subscriber list
and customer list this is the real asset of your online business and
it should always be in the top 3 things you do.

The bummarketing thing should focus on listbuilding and then selling
the products you are an affiliate for - affiliate marketing.
