What questions do I ask an expert?

Hi guys, so I am trying to create a product from an interview with an internet marketing expert. But I am sort of confused as to the best questions to ask in order to take full advantage of the little time I will be given.

So I thought maybe you guys might be able to give me a couple of ideas or maybe your very own questions so I could couple it all together for the interview.

    what product are you making? First, do research about your product and where are you lacking?
    Ask questions about that.

    If it's marketing, I suppose it's best you start with who your users would be; demographics etc? Also, what will be the best marketing strategies and how to synergize between say off line marketing and on-line?

    Why did you want to hear from this IMer in the first place? (Seriously, I want to know.) That should give some direction.

    What is IM all about? If you break it down into pieces, what do you have? Traffic, conversion, fulfillment ... maybe even upsells, downsells, affiliates ...

    What's this person known for? What products/launches/focus of expertise?

    Take a few minutes to write the answers to these questions and we'll be able to get to some meaningful questions for your interviewee.

    Who are you going to sell this interview to?
    The answer to that question should guide the questions you ask in the interview.

    Not sure this will add to those very good answers you've already rec'd, but, that never stops me. Claude hit it on the head. YOUR audience, the WHO will want the information you hope to get from the expert.

    When I interviewed Harvey Brody for a report, the first thing I did was to ASK him what he felt was important for the listener/reader to know. All experts have a bias toward what they think is important. The result of that interview, got thousands of hits and interested people who wanted to know more about HOW to establish a toll position, Mr. Brody's expertise.

    You have to be careful too, because sometimes the expert will get too industry specific or very narrow with their answers.

    Which is why you must heed Claude's advice and determine what your audience wants. Are you going to sell this as a product? Or will you use it in other ways? (We used the Brody interview as a sign up bonus, or the reason to give us email).

    What is your INTENT of the interview? Also, eliminate as much chit chat up front, do a good job with a brief intro, and jump right into it.

    If they only give you an hour, put some really good stuff up front, and at the end. Also, you want to prep the person, give them a two week lead, and send them the questions you will be asking them, this gives them time to think about what and how to respond.

    Done right, these can be very lucrative products, do it wrong with one expert, you might not get another chance with the next one.

      A few added tidbits;

      When I get interviewed, I ask (ahead of the interview) who the audience is, their experience level, and what questions they would want answered. I get a list of questions from the interviewer.....so I know what is going to be asked before we do the interview. I may send a few suggested questions to the interviewer.

      And this little gem; Experts love to give interviews. It's free marketing for them. Don't be afraid to ask any author, expert, or marketer for an hour long interview. They will almost universally say Yes. Just make sure at the end to let them plug their book or course. And always give them a copy of the interview.

          Are you serious? Work on that head trash if so. Everyone needs marketing and you're giving them an authority piece.

          Once in awhile you'll run into someone who is full of themselves, and doesn't know how to use such an interview with their own list. These are the people who'll expand their chests and say, "How big is your audience? Number of unique downloads?" etc. But they're in the small minority.

          If you're getting radio silence in response to your inquiries (how many have you sent, anyway?) then it's likely you're sending them too much info in the first message. How are you approaching potential guests... what platform, what are you saying?

            Well I am not saying this for the sake of saying it.

            I have tried contacting quite a few internet marketing vendors and gurus on Skype and they tell me they are busy preparing for this launch or that launch.

            Some have said they will get back and they never do, so I kinda gave up and I assume they do not give me the attention mainly because I have not built a valuable relationship with them and for this, I suspect the best way is being either a big buyer of their product or one of the leaders on their leader boards.

    First decide your product and ask all the pros and cons of it from the interviewer.

    Prahblem with most experts is how they could prolly say anythin' smart about anythin' -- nonea which might be useful to you.

    When you sucked alla your experts off for precisely what you wanna, what is your plan, zackly?

    Ask things like when the internet marketing expert got started? Get the person to open up a bit and share some cool tips. Basically, just have a friendly discussion like you're in a pub and talking to a friend except it's all about internet marketing.
