A new article on Search Engine Journal reports that Yahoo groups is to be completely removed from the web on December 15, 2020. The shutdown process of the once very popular website began last year, and since then, Yahoo has been removing features from the website little by little.

It started with Yahoo preventing users from being able to use groups in October 2019, meaning you could no longer post anything, but content could still be viewed and downloaded.

Ability to view content then got stripped in December 2019, and the deadline for downloading data was set to January 2020.

Until now, the last remaining users of Yahoo Groups have been desperately clinging to life on a website that bears little resembalance to its glory days. Presently, the platform's only capability is allowing group members to send direct messages to one another.

As the date for termination is creeping nearer, Yahoo Groups' fate is becoming clearer. Currently, when navigating to the groups.yahoo.com homepage, an announcement relating to the site's end appears.

So, what is the reason for the shutdown of a site once loved by so many? Well, Yahoo points to a decline in usage as being the main cause:

"Yahoo Groups has seen a steady decline in usage over the last several years. Over that same period, we've witnessed unprecedented levels of engagement across our properties as customers seek out premium, trustworthy content.

While these decisions are never easy, we must sometimes make difficult decisions regarding products that no longer fit our long-term strategy as we hone our focus on other areas of the business."
Where to next?

Yahoo has recommended Nextdoor as an alternative, also naming Facebook Groups, Google Groups, and Groups.io as viable possibe destinations for its users.

In the meantime, users of Yahoo Groups are exchanging contact details to ensure that the special friendships and communities developed on the platform stay intact as they start searching for a new place to call home.
