A new article on Forbes speaks on the future of meme culture on Instagram, which has been an essential part of the platform ever since its launch on October 6, 2010. In fact, memes continue to be a catalyst for the growth and continued success of Instagram.

Instagram has recognized the significance of memes and has since hired Ricky Sans as Strategic Partner and Manager for Memes.

Regarding his role on the Instagram team, Ricky said:

"My job is to make sure that we have someone from Instagram close to the meme community to build a deeper connection with bigger meme accounts, and also identify the next generation of meme creators, want to make sure that I have a hand in creating a diverse representation of meme creators that are celebrated on the platform."
Sans expects memes to expand to include original video, similar to what we're seeing with Reels and TikTok videos, and thinks memes will always have a deep-rooted connection to current topics.

Sans also predicts the number of creators and entrepreneurs will grow as Instagram expands monetary tools across IGTV, Reels, and Shopping, and increases options for allowing monetization of memes created on the platform.

Insight from a viral meme creator

Reid Hailey, who has been creating memes together with Derek Lucas, under their company Doing Things Media since 2015, using 20 accounts reaching over 60 million people, spoke about the significance of memes on Instagram, stating:

"Meme creators play a part in bringing our community together, and have become instrumental to get important, factual information out to their communities on Instagram," Sans told me. "So many teens and millennials use Instagram as their main source of news. Meme accounts can be a great way to make sure that reliable information reaches a broader audience that doesn't follow traditional media. We've seen different accounts rise up to the occasion especially during these times to help inform and educate their followers and support others in the community who are hurting right now."
What's next for memes?

With millions of fans worldwide, it certainly seems like memes are going nowhere anytime soon, and are set to soar even further in popularity on social media platforms like Instagram.
