If I buy an expired domain in a niche that's similar to mine, would my keyword rankings increase?

I have a website whose backlink profile is not strong and whose rankings have suffered with repeated Google algorithm changes. If I were to buy a domain (expired or otherwise) in a niche that's similar to mine--say, musical instruments--but with a much stronger backlink profile then TRANSFER my site's entire content to this new URL, would my keyword rankings increase? Obviously, this would require me to first deindex my old site entirely before moving the content to this new site where, I hope, Google will re-index the articles with the new site's much stronger backlink profile propelling the articles upwards? Any issues or problems with this method? Thank you.

    What I suggest to go for the webmaster tool and submit a request to get back your index domain (as the domain has altered the ownership). Then go for high-quality backlinks & blog.

    First things first. Backlinking is become more and more irrelevant. Google does and will do everything in their power to stop the impact of backlinking on a site ranking.

    Secondly, I wouldn't put much hope on Google re-indexing your articles and giving them the same position they have now. It will, of course, re-index them, but will they get any similar rankings? It's a question nobody can really answer. Chances are your articles will lose their rankings.

    I have said this elsewhere, if you have an old site that's got some traffic keep it the way it is. Don't transfer it to a new domain name, don't make any drastic changes to it (like changing the theme to the point all your URLs are screwed up and you have to use .htaccess to make them work). Keep promoting it any way you can and you will make a bigger progress as opposed to transferring it to a new domain name and hoping that somehow will make everything better.

    When you ask for advise on this forum I suggest you consider the source. In this regard I suggest that Google is your best source.
