@techofunda please spare yourself a massive headache, do not start a forum. It's a terrible idea to be honest. Forums are dying out, even the popular ones. Invest your time and energy into something that will produce results.

Fair enough, but give the OP some ideas. You think forums are a terrible idea, so why not share what you think is a good idea?

As for forums, just depends on intent and purpose, there are many private and short term member forums which are doing just fine and dandy.

Due diligence, is required with any ideas of doing something.

So, what is the thing worth investing time and energy into?

That's easy. Anything's better than a forum. Over the years I've seen countless people starting forums and quitting after about 2-3 months. People who have never tried to get a forum off the ground do not understand what a burden that is. I'd suggest blogging to the OP. We are all unique individuals and often our story, our insights connect with somebody. I would also suggest blogging in his own native language.

Forums have risks, and if expensive you need to be able to pay for it, for some time to come before it becomes profitable.

Forums a dying breed, it depends on who you are talking to?

I have spoken to many who have forums that are doing well, and some that are making a profit, but most probably are not, (as in most things).

Couldn't say anything about WP, apart from it being clunky, and not something l would consider, (developed some WP software in the past).

So unless you get lucky here, either go to Fiverr, and pay an expert to set it up, or ditch WP, for a stand alone platform, (which l use) or the one WF use.

You didn't mention what kind of forum you wanted to create. Not all forums are worthless. To me, forums that are too broad in the topics go quite quickly. They become confusing.

Actually any website can become confusing. I've seen many websites that, for example, a user types in "antiques for sale" and the results are nothing but make money online links. That example was from a classified ads site, but you get the idea.

A forum should be focused on the topic you want your members to talk about. Or, like the WF, you have the sub categories that a member knows exactly where they want to read and participate.

It really depends on the quality you're willing to provide, and the time you're willing to invest.

I run the internet's biggest forum directory (just google it to save me getting a warning here for plugging my own sites). A lot of the forums I originally added are dying, but some are doing pretty well still.

I started one a couple of years ago. phpBB is free but it's a bit more technical than WordPress. I just had a lot of hassles with spammers and then trying to keep the software up to date. In the end I shut the place down because some users reckoned their data had leaked, and I just wasn't prepared to put up with that amount of personal risk for a site that made me no income.
