Google Employees Have Formed their own Union
The new union will be known as the Alphabet Workers Union or AWU and has been formed as part of the Communication Workers Union. Any employee of Alphabet subsidiaries in the US and Canada can join the organization - including workers from Google - and both tech and non-tech personnel are represented. Membership fees are 1% of wages and will help fund the union. Formation of the organization is viewed as a consequence of recent sexual discrimination and harassment incidents at Google, which employees feel have been badly handled by the company. The Alphabet Workers Union tweeted the following:
"The past few years at Google have been tumultuous: secret military AI projects, multi-million dollar payouts to execs who sexually harassed our coworkers, profiting from hate speech, & more. Coworkers who've voiced concerns have even been fired, illegally, as retaliation." |
