A new article on Search Engine Journal reports that Google workers have just formed a union. The organization will concentrate on justice issues like sexual harassment, discrimination and wil stand against the victimization of employees who dare to speak up.

The new union will be known as the Alphabet Workers Union or AWU and has been formed as part of the Communication Workers Union. Any employee of Alphabet subsidiaries in the US and Canada can join the organization - including workers from Google - and both tech and non-tech personnel are represented. Membership fees are 1% of wages and will help fund the union. Formation of the organization is viewed as a consequence of recent sexual discrimination and harassment incidents at Google, which employees feel have been badly handled by the company. The Alphabet Workers Union tweeted the following:

"The past few years at Google have been tumultuous: secret military AI projects, multi-million dollar payouts to execs who sexually harassed our coworkers, profiting from hate speech, & more. Coworkers who've voiced concerns have even been fired, illegally, as retaliation."

What are the Goals of the Alphabet Workers Union?

The official AWU website states that the organization's goals are connected with justice for all Alphabet employees and more accountability on behalf of their employer:

"We want to wield our power to ensure:
  • Our working conditions are inclusive and fair,
  • Perpetrators of harassment, abuse, discrimination, and retaliation are held accountable,
  • We have the freedom to decline to work on projects that don't align with our values,
  • All workers, regardless of employment status, can enjoy the same benefits."
