Five Unexpected Content Marketing Skills That Are a Must to Build in 2021

A new article on Search Engine Journal says that self-built marketing skills are becoming even more necessary with the arrival of a new digital age. The author lists five skills you need to learn if you're going to be market-ready.

The author says that today's digital age is creating a new world. Google fills more than six thousand roles in a single year and receives over a million applications. Yet, are traditional systems for education adequately preparing the next generation for success? A recent study conducted by Kaplan University and QuestResearch found that:

"There are very few believers in the work readiness of college graduates. Only 13% of US adults, 11% of C-level executives and 6% of college and university trustees strongly agree with statements about the work readiness of graduates."
The good news is that in a $400 billion per year industry like marketing, you don't necessarily need a college degree. It's also why the author puts much importance on self-built skills.

Five Skills for Building to Win Market-Ready Placement in the Content Marketing Industry
  • An Understanding of Brand Strategy - You need to know about this to use content marketing to promote brands. Content strategy is barely a decade old, but some of the practices go back hundreds more.
  • An Understanding of SEO - More than 90% of US website traffic comes via Google, and SEO drives eleven times more traffic than organic social media. Nearly 70% of all online activity starts with a search engine, so you absolutely must know about SEO.

  • An Ability to Research Deeply - It's not enough to just look up a statistic and keep references up to date too. That just means doing more strenuous research and being diligent about what gets included in the content you produce.
  • An Ability to See It Through - AKA tenacity, it's sticking with the task until it's done and becomes a success. That can take more than a year to happen, and a lack of patience does a lot of damage to many campaigns, so you have to persevere.

Find Your Own Skill-Building Path

The author says there are many more subskills than the five listed, and while these are the top five things to remember, it's important to build up your own skillset for content marketing. Being successful is about always being willing to learn and open to new opportunities - and embracing setbacks as an opportunity to discover better ways of working.

would love to see stats on how many Gen Z aged folks are endeavoring to become solopreneur content creators themselves. Between YouTube and TikTok's platforms, as well we Snap offering millions for folks able to create viral videos (https://www.searchenginejournal.com/...tlight/388619/) ... feels like a path that young people will be increasingly enticed by (for the time being at least)

The thing is that as more and more platforms become available content creators get less "bang for their buck" on each one. I think it will become ever increasingly difficult as time goes on, but the people right at the top will do well.

    Just a thought - I'm no expert!

A quick warning though: don't develop TUNNEL VISION when working with keywords.

Many content marketers adopt a "pin the tail on the donkey" mindset when it comes to keywords.

They think that as long as they develop content that is OPTIMIZED for the keyword, they will rank and that rank will stick.

Before Google's RANKBRAIN, this was true... NOT ANYMORE.

Since user experience is now a factor (measured in terms of BOUNCE RATE among others), it's more important than ever to create content that delivers on the SEARCH INTENT behind keywords.

Reverse engineering your competition can only go so far, you have to ROLL UP YOUR SLEEVES and put in the work to psychologically profile each target or focus keyword.

If you nail this, visitors your content pulls are LESS LIKELY to bounce out

  • Original, unique and useful content is the key to attract and keep your audience. the rankings will follow.

This is excellent advice. I've been in the trenches for over 18 months now and I've learned an enormous amount about these 5 skill sets. But it has been great fun and sometimes frustrating. There is so much to learn and you really need to learn them in sequence.

Once you nail creating quality content, then it's time to really understand the promotion strategy in social media, after that it's all about creating relationships with authority websites to have premium backlinks and so on.

Soon... everything will change... and no role will rule the market...!! Just wait. And the best thing is to return to old fashion such as direct marketing with a piece of paper brochure (but you must think how to digitalize it). IMHO.
