Worth It To Create A Course?

Hi everyone,

Has anyone had success in creating courses on
sites like Udemy and Teachable and similar sites?

I have many skills I can make a course of but just wondering
if it is worth to go through the time and make some?

All input is appreciated. TIA!

Jamie :-)

Udemy and Teachable are platforms for hosting a course, the advantages are built in traffic. People who go there search for courses. All platforms can be either good or bad, depending on what you want.

So, let me give you a different perspective on why you SHOULD create some courses, OK?

To go through the time is the question, eh? So, what else would you be doing with said TIME?

How are you spending time now, and is it returning money to you (if that is the goal)?

See, once you create a course, the time is gone but the product lasts forever. A real life example: I created a course in 1997, had limited success in the market (not sold online at that time). However, those who were aware of the course became some well known influencers on the Internet, and revived the course through their suggestions.

It wasn't the course that continued to exist but rather the CREATOR (Me) or expert on the subject which produced untold profits. Two decades after the course was created and long forgotten, I still have dealings with people who were aware of it.

So, I would say it was time well spent. The returns on that time have been 100 fold.

Also, in addition to creating income immediately, if it is topical...it gives you credibility and also could be used as a lead generator, to get into relationships with customers which could have a lifetime value many multiples of the cost of your course.

I don't know, honestly, if it would be worth your time to create a course, all I can do is tell you it has been extremely beneficial to me over a few decades now, and ask you what your time is worth to you now?

If you value your time at say 100 dollars an hour, then how much will it cost you to create your course? Ten hours would cost you a thousand.

How much will you charge? Say 50 bux, you need 20 people to take your course to break even on your time investment. Right?

But what is the value of any one of those 20 customers going forward?

I don't know of anyone who has PROVIDED VALUE in a course, who has said it was a waste of their time.

So, think about it and see what it is you expect from the course, then be cold and calculating about whether or not to do it, hope this gives some food for thought.

I think you're most likely suffering from "procrastination" and thereby losing out on helping people learn your knowledge and skills.

    Mind how I put it?

It's not just about the money you'll make off it but the fact you're going to impact life or two with a brand new skill that will help them forever is something to encourage you in putting your knowledge out.

You can host your course on different platforms but Udemy and Teachable are just platforms with built-in traffic like the above user already said.

Else, you can host your courses on Vimeo, own a membership site on WordPress, etc.
