Web Redesign without sabotaging SEO

Do too many 301 redirects still slow down site speed? And if you setup a 301 redirect on a page, are the backlinks to the original, historic page preserved?--

When you so too many, how many?

If you place a backlink to something like example.com and that site somehow gets redirected to url, the backlink is still active to what the link which was pasted in the hypermarkup .

As far as pagespeed, yes, it would be affected if the destination url has lots of new requirements to load that wasn't there before, it could cause it slow down.

The loss in page speed is infinitesimal, so that is hardly a concern.

Last I recall, 301s now pass 100% of the "juice" that they did to the original site. The problem with losing "link juice" occurs when URLs are 301'd multiple times (URL A to URL B; URL B to URL C; URL C to URL D).
