Apple Targets Facebook In Privacy Announcement

A new article on Forbes reports that Apple recently required all apps to have "privacy nutrition labels." Next up is its full implementation of App Tracking Transparency (ATT), which Apple claims is coming in the next beta update of iOS. However, it looks like Apple is targeting Facebook specifically because although the social media platform's name isn't mentioned anywhere, Apple does feature Facebook's new app install privacy pop-up screen in its latest announcement about ATT.

The author thinks this is far from being a coincidence. Facebook pushed back against Apple on this issue late last year and placed ads in the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal, as well as other major publications. Facebook was adamant that Apple's activities would harm small businesses by limiting how effective ads on Google, Facebook, and other platforms would be. While Facebook's ad campaign looked after its own commercial interests, that didn't mean it wasn't correct in its assumptions. Sasha Souza runs a creative consultancy:

"I rely on retargeting for my consulting business. If they lose that much, imagine how much those of us with small businesses will lose in not being able to advertise to people who showed an interest, but for whatever reason, it wasn't right at that very moment."
Apple's line in the sand is a reaction to recent data scandals and it's designed to put people in control of their privacy. Tim Cook is Apple CEO:

"If we accept as normal and unavoidable that everything in our lives can be aggregated and sold, we lose so much more than data, we lose the freedom to be human. And yet, this is a hopeful new season, a time of thoughtfulness and reform."
Mark Zuckerberg isn't anywhere near being on the same page as Tim Cook:

"Apple may say they're doing this to help people but the moves clearly track their competitor interests. We and others are going to be up against this for the foreseeable future."
I'd be interested to hear the views of others here.= Surely privacy matters more than marketing? And we can find new ways to do that without breaking privacy rules, right? Overall - this has to be good for everyone, although there might be some short-term pain?
