The BEST way to Start Making Money Online from ZERO!

Quite simply, the best way IMO to start with zero and make your first dollars is to provide a service. Why?

1. You don't need a product - YOU are the product

2. You can post your services on a free site like blogger or weebly and have a web presence

3. You can easily offer a few free samples to build your reputation - IE you can do article writing and so you offer to write some free articles for testimonials

4. There are free scripts and resources on the web to help you do tasks. IE I have a friend who got paid to create a Twitter background which she had the option of using Gimp, but also downloaded the free trial of photoshop which gave her ample time to get her first job done and get paid

5. You decide when you can work and how much. The more you do the more you can make. You can also give yourself an increasing pay rate based on time and experience

6. You can get paid within hours of being taken on to do a job

7. You can specialize in one type of service which can be as easy as doing manual bookmarking for someone, or as complex as creating a fully blown pre-packaged websites. All these jobs have positions to fill.

8. You still reading this? Go figure out a service to offer!

Having trouble with step 8? Here's a sneaky trick. Go look in the classifieds and WSO's and see what everyone else is getting paid to do.

Now scram!

What? Looks like this might entail doing some work? YES!

I didn't say there was no work required, just said you can start with $0 in your pocket.

  • Hey Jill

This is a very powerful post, because it's not only a PROVEN way of making money, it is also a really good way to get 'seed' money which could be used to climb the Internet Marketing ladder. For example, the money made could be used to pay somebody to create a basic review site/page and then pay somebody else to write some articles to drive Earticle trafiic and get listed organically too....then, the money from that could be used to pay somebody to create a fully fledged Ebook...and so on.

    Thanks for the post.

    • Here's an idea - here's how one could market their services for free and get the first dollar.

As we all know, you can only put links in your signature to sites that you own, but here is how I would get around that if I didn't have a site that I technically owned.

I would put something in my signature here that says "Let me write you an article for a dollar! Pm me for examples of my work"

Before doing this, I would offer to write a couple of articles for free, and get some feedback.

I would post the feedback and some rates on a free site that I don't own. Then I would put the message in my signature and be sure to spend some time adding some thoughtful helpful posts to this forum, and wait for someone to PM me for more information on my service. It might say "Your best chance at getting a quality 500 word article for a dollar! Native English speaker - too good to be true? PM me if you don't believe it."

(heck, if I saw that in someones signature it would definitely catch my eye)

I would then PM any interested parties back with a link to my services page where they could see an example of my work, and they could decide if they want an article from me for a dollar.

As soon as I got that first dollar, I would go get a dot info domain for .89¢ and use it as a new domain for my services. I would then do a few more articles for enough to get me a cheapo private hosting account where I could put up my own site to list my services at a slightly higher rate. I would add that to my signature here.

It's not glamorous, but can be done and within less than a week I would bet.

  • I think setting up simple squeeze pages with a good autoresponder followup sequence selling affiliate products or PLR is a great way to actually earn quick profits and its a proven system that has worked for many years now.

Although not free ,you can use a cheap AR service and get PLR free to put content into your AR sequence pitching products as an affiliate or sell your own.

You can also grab free videos online and send your leads to the pages you post the videos on preselling what you have to sell. (theres lots of unbranded free videos online to use)

    Lots of variations here....

This can actually be used as a stand alone business model and it is very easy to scale. You don't need lots of optins each day just 1-5 each day with losts of sites to make some good money.

  • Hey Jill...awesome post that I sure wish more people new to IM would read. It's exactly how I started out in IM and it gave me the income to branch out and be able to try new things via purchasing new products and guides (and domains...I'm hopelessly addicted to domains...LOL).

It can be completely free to start and can be scaled up or down whenever you're ready.

    Great post and great advice!

  • The other good thing about providing a service is that you will learn much more about Internet Marketing based off the work you will be doing for others.

The downside: What's the difference between working a 9-5 and by being a service providor? AKA it's not set-and-forget passive income unless you hire workers.
    • [ 1 ] Thanks
  • Thanks for the tip Avenuegirl. Those were the steps I took when I started my graphic design service. But it wasn't that easy so I had to go into partnership with a trustworthy friend of mine and things have been going on well since then.
These are steps anyone who wants to provide online services sh'ld follow.

  • Hi Jill,

Thanks for this post. Got some info to put into action.
  • The big weakness is if you're in America. It's hard to make enough with our inflated dollars considering they can pay so little to someone in India.

It's the one area government can't intervene to force you to pay more for a service. I wonder how long they'll allow it? lol

    • That's why I don't bother to underprice. If they're just looking for cheap articles, they can find them anywhere.

  • I have found that go local works great with services. People would rather pay you than some faceless corp. That is if they can see you. Meeting face to face helps you land big contracts in service companies. They fear sending money overseas. Often they have no legal recourse. However, if they are local and you do not produce, they can sue you.

Also, many people fear giving access. They want to know who they are dealing with first before they give you a pass. Small biz have often been burned by unscrupulous operators that take the money and run.

i would recomend that start making money from :

      Writing articles
Making Profiles on web 2.0 websites
      Become affiliate

These things lead to good understanding of internet marketing and it will help in long run. In this, there is no investment in terms of money and you will get paid$$$

  • As the first post I've read on WF (I just signed up minutes ago), I must say - Great Start! Great info, Thanks!

    1. Brand yourself and sell your time.
    2. Use Facebook, YouTube and Twitter to market your services. Build a network of prospects.
    3. Provide Free Bonuses and Your Services to your leads in Facebook and Twitter.
    4. Use Fiverrr to do inexpensive marketing (search facebook or twitter) to grow your prospects.

Cheapest and quickest way that worked for me.

    Goodluck

  • This is an older thread by the OP, but it is every bit as valid today as it was back then. As I've stated time and time again, providing services is probably the fastest and easiest way to earn your first few dollars in IM.

It's going to entail working and is not going to give you "pushbutton" cash, but if you work conscientiously at it, you'll definitely be able to make consistent money while the other newbies are floundering around and not making a dime chasing all the shiny objects around them!
    • [ 1 ] Thanks
  • Nice guide, Jill. It will certainly help beginners.
  • I agree on this! Freelancing is indeed the fastest way to earn online nowadays. There are a competitions in some areas though if you apply on certified freelance sites like guru, odesk or elance but it is well worth the effort because once you established yourself as an expert and had gained credibility you can increase your price per project or hour basis.

Freelancing is a smart move to get started with 0 dollars in the marketing world.

    • Ha ha, it is!

And you know, I don't think Fiverr was so "hot" at the time - so that is probably what I would add at this point. Go post some wacky gig over there.

It takes some time to get paid - but you can get paid!

Yes - your response is valid on the seed money.

And I understand about "undervaluing" oneself. But some people have no reputation or experience, and taking on a project at no cost will encourage them to learn what they need to learn while not feeling pressured that a contract is at stake. It really depends on the type of task at hand, it's value, and how prepared you really are to do that work.

The first wedding I shot, I did for a friend and virtually for free. I needed something for a wedding reel to get me more work. The friend was on a really tight budget. So, the job was done for almost nothing as I needed to only cover my base costs and I needed materials to work with.

I had a blast doing it, everyone was elated over the video that was done, I learned a ton of mistakes not to do through the process as well (I shot way too much footage, lol - which took forever to go back through) and in the end the tape I made got me immediate hire for subcontracting work with a company. From there on in I was paid for every wedding I shot as well as other events.

I would have felt terrible pressure if I was having to work under contract not knowing if I could really complete the task as I had never done that kind of work up to that point. I wanted to just go through the motions the first time - like a dress rehearsal. For me this lets me think more clearly while doing something. I do it because I am wanting to learn and enjoy and find my best work comes out as a result. This may be different for others.

Another thing to consider - I also realize if you are going to put the time in for something you want to see massive results. Some people do this and get no results. I'm not saying they need to set their ultimate goals to a dollar, but going really low for just a dollar or two to begin gives you proof that some money can be made. I see a lot of posts here where people have been at this for months and made nothing and think it is all hogwash. So, if they make at least one dollar it can debunk some thoughts for them.
  • Great post, Jill, and one I wish I had read when I first got started. It took me a while to figure out that the easiest way for me personally to make money was to offer writing services - ok, so I'm a slow learner. I'm sure you helped a lot of people by posting this.

    • As far as "inflated dollars" and many people outsourcing to India or Philipines; there are still many good English speaking writers in the States and UK that are making good change for their efforts. (Bill, Alexa etc)

There will always be people looking to get a bargain and sometimes you get lucky. I did have a VA for a while and his writing was pretty good but I still had to rewrite his stuff. (read rewrite not "spin")

I also don't think that anyone would scoff at someone offering to write for a buck or for free at first. I know that if I could find a good native speaking writer who was just getting started I would jump on it and create a relationship before everyone and his brother monoplized his time. I'd become his first, best and oldest customer and thus try to earn his or her loyalty.

  • nice guide. this post is very very important to me.
  • If I were starting out again I'd probably start off by going deep into a subject on the WF such as email marketing, AdWords or SEO etc, test it all out and make a WSO based on my experience. Then I'd start putting the profits into paid advertising and grow my business from there. There's so many models I've tried over the years online, but I keep coming back to info marketing.
  • Hello Everybody this is my first post!

I have only began to look into IM and working on-line in the past few days and I had this forum recommended to me by a friend.
I have always been interested in working on-line but never got around to doing anything about it. I have no experience as such apart from a weebly site I built one day while having fun.
Anyway I joined this forum today and have been reading up on various topic's and posts and I have been lead to this topic.
In this topic Jill you give some excellent advise I like the idea of offering to write an article for someone for free.
    To Mr.Peterson
    In your response you said
"I also don't think that anyone would scoff at someone offering to write for a buck or for free at first. Well I fit the bill her 100% imo.
I am a good native speaking writer (I'm from Ireland)
    I am just getting started.
I would write articles for free to start out.
And also I am very committed into improving my lifestyle and earning extra money through hard work which I am fully dedicated to do. I know it will be a long road and there will be difficult times ahead for me as I am a newbie in this field, but again I am fully committed to give it a shot.
Thanks for taking the time to read this message.
If anybody else would like me to write an article for free just pm me with details.

    Many regards

    Pattayarox

(Sorry Jill if this is sabotaging your topic if so you can delete this post)
  • That's a great way to start - you can build a business with very little capital. But you need to be careful that you don't get locked into selling your time only. You need this to the first phase in a multi-phase strategy that leads away from your time being the only product. Otherwise you are condemning yourself to working flat out for ever, and are not building any equity.

  • Great reminder for all the new people coming on here. I guess many people think of writing when you say freelancing or maybe graphics creation.

The thing is, it's flooded by all the "new people" but there is much other stuff they could do for people. Even if people can't do that, they might have a great voice that would be great for a voice over.

Then they could go out there and find people who look for voice overs, or look in the warriors wanted section(can't remember the exact name), and if they see people looking for voice overs. Write them a personal email with a small clip they've made so people can hear the quality.

  • I think what it takes to make money online is the desire to learn. From my own experience I can say that the only reason I've done well online is that I took a few months to learn. It was after this learning period that I was able to implement successful tactics.

I'm sure a lot of people get distracted by one method of making money online when there are thousands out there. I think it's important to soak up all the information you can find and turn it into the one method that works for you.
    • [1] reply
    • I think you hit the nail on the head- once you find something that works for you, just stick to it. Spend most of your time scaling it, and a little bit of time testing other things.
  • There is a ton of great advice in this thread. Just about any of them will make money. The key ... and this can be one of the most challenging things to do ... is to FOCUS and TAKE ACTION. It is incredibly common for people to get overwhelmed with information and end up sitting in front of their computer for days with glazed eyes and a headache, but without actually DOING anything at all. If you stay focused and take action on the things that you're learning, you WILL make money online. You have to do the work.
  • This is an amazing guide. Kind a wish I would have had something like this when i started, probably would have saved me hundreds. Thank you.
  • Thanks for the tips Jill. Like everyone else in the thread, I wish I had seen this post when I first started looking at Internet Marketing. Since I have been offering services to other marketers, I have gained more confidence, and gained trust of bigger names.

This is a post that everyone should pay attention to if they are starting out.
  • I'm a newbie. Can someone tell me what WSO stands for? Thanks!
    • [1] reply
  • Here is the biggest trap newbies fall into.

They go out there and offer a product or service wonding why they fail badly.

Do the opposite. Study your competition, study the high earning services, find out what products and services are hot right now, and reverse engineer them.

A guarenteed way to success and we been doing it for years.

We reverse engineer the gurus, and services and offer what they are selling. Dont think this is a new technique either, the gurus copy eachother or MIMIC eachother all the time.

If you find a service it is the same. If you see someone run off their feet and their service selling out all the time, there is a reason for it. IT IS IN HIGH DEMAND!!!! people want it, and are willing to spend lots of money on it. So just see if you can offer, or provide something similar.

One warrior I know in OZ took this information and now sells his service on here in 'for hire section' literally went from $0 a day to $130 - $140 a day. He is one smart cookie too. The info i told him, I just revealed in here right in this post!!!! tis staring at you right in the face, so go read it again **wink**

    It can be done.
  • Thanks for your information.
  • The first dollar I made online was by posting in a forum which paid 1 cent per post. I first gathered $2 by posting 200 posts and withdrew the $2 to e-gold (which took some txn fees).

Seriously, that is an awesome idea and you laid it out perfectly for anyone willing to try.

Too many of us here think we can "create a product," sell it as a WSO, and move to a tropical island.

While some can do that, and some probably have, it's not that easy - especially when you have zero experience and zero budget.

But THIS idea is superb! Offer a service. Brilliant.

  • I agree with your tips 100%. Providing a service on places like Fiverr or Zeerk or even here on the Warrior Forum can be a great place to begin as a newbie.

And once the service becomes more popular you can even outsource these tasks to qualified people, or train them how to do it.

Or buying a piece of software that will do it for you.

There are many very popular gigs like creating Web 2.0 sites or link wheels where all one really needs is get a subscription to SENuke and to simply set it up and have the software to the work.

Which can be very easy to do and will still provide a quality service.

    • Yes, I started with offering my coaching services through a sales floor 11 years ago. I developed internet marketing curriculum that focuses on someone exploring their interests, developing their niche and branding.

Over the past couple years, I have specialized even further into WordPress installation and SEO for WP. After about a year of learning all about it and testing my own blogs, I was offered an opportunity with the company that sells my coaching to present my blogging specialty in a 90-day challenge for their company. It was a fantastic success!

So, I wrote down what was successful and developed it into a blogging program to get traffic. I'm re-writing it right now and updating it with the new social media explosion and I'm almost ready to put it out there as a WSO. Woohoo!

  • Great post thanks for the information, this will help alot of people I hope.
  • Great Post! Hopefully there are some "greenies" that come across it and take your advice.

    Cheers~
  • Thanks for the tip Ms Jill.
I totally agree 100%; you can start from nothing by providing your services as a freelance. You can provide articles or do some rewriting stuff. Indeed, there are a lot of competitions going on at present but you must have to be unique in some ways above the others, as most people would say, you rise from the group. You don't need some money to start in the business; it's all up to the person's desire to learn and to really do this business seriously.
You may also offer your services as a Virtual Assistant for clients from other countries or if you may want, graphics editor or video editor if you have the skills about editing and making designs and video presentations.
  • Nice Post Jill I appreciate it but I would add some sort of eligibility for the successful implementation of your plan to earn.

The person should be determined to work more than earn.

The person should not have the misunderstanding of earning by doing nothing.

The person should not underestimate his skill set rather he will be focusing on enhancing his skill.

The person will not let hopelessness to take control of him.

You will be supposed to work on late nights make sure that you have coffee and red bull in your cupboards and fridge.

The person must have the thirst of learning and experimenting everyday.

The person should be supporting with everyone and must know how to develop healthy business relationships
  • awesome post!

it helps people who renders services to earn
  • the first thing if you want to earn money online is to have your website by earning money online I mean full income
  • Excellent thread some solid points here !
  • That is some really good advice and it makes sense. It's easier to sell a service that you are skilled in than it is to create a product and then generate targeted traffic hoping that someone will buy the product especially considering people want someone else to do things for them, they don't want to have to do it themselves

  • Really interesting information even though this post is quite old - still relevant now though. What works for me is starting with a simple idea and getting presence and slowly building your list. The likes of Fiverr and the others are generally an inexpensive way of getting your presence.. if you are new, try a few things out. I have often found that this is the best way to learn. You could spend weeks reading posts, looking at software, so called miracle software!!, and end up not actually doing anything! Get the ball rolling and in the correct order and you will be surprised how much you will learn and the next time you do it, it will be much easier, and the money will slowly start to show. It is a slow process though, not a get rich quick scheme!!
    Good luck...

  • Great post, people say providing marketing services is saturated but the reality is that there are an infinite amount of websites who are all trying to reach the top, so you can always sell your service, you just need to have the ability to take action.
  • My best method is to become affiliate of product you really like, start promoting it in forums, social bookmarking sites and in comments section of relevant sites without spamming too much. After making some money, you can create a website promoting the affiliate product, build links slowly and steadily, bring more traffic through seo-ing.
  • yes, dont' too overthink to start... maybe if you think "when I post in a website, how will I get traffic? doing SEO???"

I know SEO is so important, but free website like wordpress.com will give you free promotion because they're randomly displaying your site in the home page. And if you think, "Who will read my site in other people's wordpress blog?", actually tons of people are using free WP blog, and they r getting traffic..

Again, don't overthink when you're starting out, just do it and you will see result .

    • don't try to run a business on free blogs on wordpress.com - it's against their TOS anyways.

Invest in your business! Buy your own domain and get hosting. Install WordPress on your own site. Now you own your own virtual real-estate.

Don't ever rely 100% on a 3rd party site to run your business!

  • Really, REALLY simplified example here, but check out this post from Mark Cuban on how to make money as a student: (buddy of mine posted this on Facebook)
Making Money as a Student « blog maverick

    LOTS of stuff like this...
  • Great Post! I have been able to make money fast with local small businesses. Many think it would be thousands of dollars to take their business online. Many also have limited online experience and immediately see you as an expert.

I have also had a lot of success with thrift stores, pawn shops and someone who cleaned out foreclosed homes. I listed the items on ebay for them. I also listed RVs and cars on ebay for people.

The work is endless when you look at it that way...helping offliners get online.
  • I LOVE that you started with the product is YOU! So true.
  • You are right about this. Offering a few services on a small scale is a great way to grow into a big company. I have been doing this for a few years with great success. 90% is customer service...customer service and of course value.
  • Excellent Thread! Thanks for sharing.
  • Yes, making money online is easy, but is a completely different story when it comes to building an online business.

It's good to make some cash first by providing services if you already have the specialty or expertise. Then, while making money online, invest part of your hard earned money into real good products or courses and learn how to build online business.

I made my first dollar online by doing freelance writing and I truly believe that it is not hard to make money online. If you want to get yourself paid by providing services, the trick is never stand in a passive position. You should go out and find clients for yourself. After they have decided to use your service, make sure you give them some bonus service to build relationship. If you know how to win projects and you know how to retain your customers, trust me, you can make enough good money to buy all the resources you need to start building your own online business.

    Have a nice day =)

    • In 2005, this was what I did:

A Story of Courage -- "From Why to How through ICT" - YouTube
For those who need to read something, instead of viewing it in video:

What I did in 2005 was to initially offer my own time and expertise in writing tech content for a couple of North American corporations in the software development industry with newly launched home and office software products. After a few good weeks of working with them, they asked me to hire, train and manage a few more writers, so they can get more tech content in the overall quality they got from me, so I went ahead and hired my wife, a friend in Bicol and another friend in Davao, work at home moms and dads. After a few good months of working with them:

I developed innovative concepts for marketing their products on the Internet, for them to get wider market reach, better brand name exposure, more traffic, more affiliates and more sales, all while cutting their office equipment and manpower hiring, training and management overheads. I integrated these concepts into the custom business proposals I formulated and sent to them. What happened next was:

We signed them up. We registered our business. We didn't have an office, only a place which also served as our home, so, after barely a month, we grew into a homebased business with 45 independent homebased subcontractors across the Philippines, all working for these two corporations as their tech content writers. How did my wife and I do this, all while we stayed at home?

We formulated and implemented offline and online systems and processes to get interested job seekers across the Philippines with substantial expertise, test and hire them as independent homebased subcontractor tech content researchers/writers, and train/supervise/manage them while we all worked at home. We integrated a head hunting commission arrangement, so our friends and relatives were the ones who implemented the online and offline job seeker acquisition campaigns for us. We formulated, tested and implemented daily quotas for full timers and part timers. We formulated, tested and implemented daily notification, reporting, training, supervision, Q/A and daily/weekly/monthly performance evaluation processes for such an arrangement. What happened after another couple months was:

We grew into a business with 2 head offices here in Manila, 9 provincial city offices across the Philippines (we now have 7), 87 inhouse employees, 62 independent homebased subcontractors and 11 long-term contracts with 11 North American corporations operating in the software development industry. Our biggest milestones were:

      • From late 2005 to mid 2007, we helped the carrier product of one of our corporate clients to become the world's best selling Microsoft Windows System Registry cleaner software of all time, and this happened in 2007. And:

      • From late 2007 to late 2008, we helped the tech content info database portal of one of our corporate clients to be included in the top 100 best tech sites of all time, and this was in 2008. We continue to work with them up to this day. Then:

We grew and expanded our reach to affiliate marketing networks, content development networks, small to mid-scale companies, home business owners and individual Internet marketers. Well, this just means:

I grew my independent tech content writer arrangement, into a Manila-based brick and mortar company that services North American, European, Australian and Asian corporations, companies, businesses, home business owners and independent Internet marketers. Oh, by the way:

My wife and I started out without any capital investment, other than our own time and expertise. And:

I've been totally blind, permanently, for almost nine years now, after being gunned down twice last November 2003...
      • [ 3 ] Thanks
