Which is the best membership plugin for wordpress?

No plugin for membership. It will end up in a mess, going to drain your hosting resources and will not perform well.

There are a lot of options. But they all have different features. What exactly are you looking for? For example, do you need to accept certain kinds of payment or protect special content? What are you selling? Text mostly, videos, what?

  That still doesn't tell a lot but I'll take a shot anyway.
  
  A couple of free ones that I've used are S2 Member and Paid Memberships Pro. They both have paid upgrades but the free version is good enough for many membership sites to get going.
  
  The free versions provide basic content restriction, the ability accept payments, etc.
  
  You can start with the free versions but I would suggest as soon as you start making money with your membership site, you look into upgrading to the paid versions if the premium features will help you make more $.
  
  On one site I'm using WP eMember which isn't free but it's $60 including lifetime updates (and they actually do updates which many plugins with a 1x price don't). I've been using it for 2-3 years. It's not the sexiest, but it's stable and gets the job done for my needs.

I like LearnPress for their membership plugin, you have to pay for that feature though. The plugin itself is free though as a course delivery tool so you can try it out.

There is a wordpress plugin called Memberpress that you maybe want to check out.
It comes with a fee though. They have different pricing for that.
