Getting new links from old ones?

I'm trying to save a bit of time here and was thinking of how I could use old articles that I submitted to directories like ezine that I don't need for the original niche I submitted them for. So I just want to know, can I edit the old articles, when I say edit I just mean edit the resource box and change the link to a different site (it's still sort of a similar niche) this way getting a new link for a new site. What I want to know is, would this give me a fresh link or do you only get new links when a new article is submitted and published?

Sorry for what is probably a really stupid question.

Yes, I would have thought that the link juice would pass on to the new target website. A link is a link so I don't see why the article would have to be a new one.
