Someone, somewhere is always looking for a solution to a problem.

BBC NEWS | Europe | Hi-tech holy water calms flu fear

Look at every problem or fear you or your community has and you could find a new business.

I was just watching Seth Godin on youtube earlier speaking about the exact same thing. Well, he didn't necessarily speak of "fear" per se, however, his point was that successful businesses or marketers are all about being remarkable and solving problems.

I like where you went in the latter part suggesting that "communities" (While I understand you may not have meant it this way, I am reading this as neighborhoods or populations. i.e. local nurses at the area hospitals, local soccer moms, knitting groups, or rec league softball) have problems that need solving. Great opportunity for to provide an outlet for some social networking and word of mouth marketing for the right niche.

    Thanks for the synchronicity.

That is exactly what I meant. Let's take soccer mums as a simple example.

Christmas is coming up so they need help choosing the right soccer-related present. Who is 'hot' now Beckham, Ronaldo, Kaka?

You could promote/do an article about their boots. If the kid's hero is Beckham, found out what boots he wears and the soccer mum can buy those.
The only danger is, the kid might never take them off (my kid brother used to wear his Beckham kit 24/7 ).

I was excited to read "Catholic churches in Italy are installing automatic holy water dispensers to help reduce the risk of spreading swine flu."

I immediately assumed it was because the holy water was performing miracles and curing people of swine flu, which would be very good PR for the church, and quite a miraculous world event.

However I then read on and found out that it is just a boring sanitation measure replacing fonts which get contaminated by dozens of different people using them. Bah.
