How do you handle subscription payments?

So, I started a few independent works, some of which have a monthly payment/subscription element. I have very few customers, so the problem of using a third party tool isn't worth it.
I've looked at it until now:
Payments for QuickBooks
Not viable because customers seemingly had to give me CC# and also had to sign an agreement (icky)
2) Strip Strip
I do not see much documents on how to do this without minimizing web-based software, such as WooCommerce or Magento, to manage recurrent entry.

3) Subscriptions to Paypal
There are many horror stories, but they offer a nice model of subscription I can use with a link or a button. The entry of the card is on their payment door.

Paypal is the nearest and easiest, but I want to avoid problems of quality. It would be different if we were to speak about 100 or 200 customers, but I'm 2-10. You want to know what other people use as their workflow in similar situations. Instead of going through my website I want to send clients via a connection to a payment gateway and let them interact directly with it.

PayPal is a pain in the butt sometimes but I have been using them for years. If you're planning on making money for the long term, I recommend getting a business account and going over their terms.

There's nothing wrong with having 2-10 members.
Everybody has to start from somewhere and your
    numbers will grow.

Have you thought about using ClickBank?
You may need to purchase additional software.
I am using S2Member, it is a WordPress plugin
    that integrates with ClickBank.

If you plan to make money with memberships
it might be worth it to spend the money and
avoid the inconveniences that you described.

I'm working on an info products subscription site at the moment. I'm using the PayPal button method. Once it's set up there should be very little maintenance.

What horror stories did you hear about?

To sum up the problem, PayPal has too much control and power over YOUR money which is why many business owners detest PayPal. They regularly do things a bank would only do under exceptional circumstances. PayPal froze my account once which lasted for weeks (which stopped me from settling invoices) and if you get enough disputes under your belt as a merchant their systems start to treat your business as suspicious, which means further unexplained holds on your funds. The processor also has high fees. I remember paying $260 once on a $4,000 invoice, which is 6.50%. Never used PayPal again for large amounts. And like credit card companies (or because of them) its policies are heavily weighted in favor of the buyer instead of the merchant. So if you get in a situation where its your word vs theirs the company will almost always side with the buyer. Years ago they could get away with these dickish policies but now there's more choice in the market they might look to change things up as many merchants (including myself) refuse to use them for business purposes due to these reasons.

        Hi Matthew

Thank you for your reply, it sounds as though you have had a really horrible experience. Really horrible feeling not having access to your money.

Is there another method you can recommend?

I did a review on GrooveFunnels last year now rebranded as "Groove/cm last year and it is still in Beta technically but boy it has come a long way. (There is also a "GrooveHQ" an entire different non related Business.)

They have GroovePay option and also PayPal option. GroovePay you are basically using their PayPal and of course a small fee.

But the entire platform is FREE to join with a Freemium version for each App.

When you join you are getting access to an entire suite of tools Free and of course upgrades if you want/need more functionality.
