What's a good strategy to convert your free users to the paid ones?

We can't just keep free trial users or we won't make money, right? What are some of your best practices to convert these trials to full-paying subscribers?

    Hi Enzo.

Although I'm sure there could be some good "general advice" -- I think you would get a better response by being more specific and/or giving an example.

YouTube for example has a paid option for their Visitors/Users where basically it's YouTube without all the ads. Another example -- that may be more applicable -- would be offering Users something else (that's "valuable") as something of an "Upgrade" ... Where they're still Users just paying for more "value". (Some of Amazon's Marketing would be a good example.)

That said, I'm not an expert on the subject. Great question though. : )

Are your free members opting into a capture page and subscribing to your email list? In my experience, my buyers generally come from my follow up series. I use to use pre-written email swipes, but my conversions were not that great. When I started writing my own emails, they started to convert.

It does take time to craft and tweak your emails for your specific offers but it is well worth it in the long run. I also create short YT videos that highlight a feature of my business and add a link to the video in my emails so they can become familiar with my style and personality. This is what is working for me.

After the free trials, is there a way to limit content? I used to send free e-mail articles from my paid newsletter. And I would stop the short articles, in the middle, with a link to "read the rest" and it would go to a sales page for a paid subscription.

If it were me, I would probably only have paid subscriptions with a free trial, and a credit card that starts billing after the free trial. Maybe they could pay $1 up front (for the trial period) so you could get the card number.

That's how I sold my paid newsletter subscriptions.

You set a limit to the trial period - I don't think I've ever seen a free trial without a time restriction.

If you're talking about ongoing free users of a service, send them regular reminders of the paid option benefits, and throw in the occasional special upgrade deal for "existing loyal users".

I personally believe that a good option is to provide them free access to your product or service, and then, once they tried it, they are ready to pay. The fundamental element in this situation is to provide them the most amazing product/service during the free trial.

I like keeping the front-end offer free and useful. That makes it possible for us to run altruistic ads. We earn money in the backend with free webinar training where we pitch our services. Some free users never purchase. But they often leave the best reviews and give the most referrals. But yeah, not enough of the free users upgrade, we rework the offer. It's always the offer. Always.

      Hi Matt.

I just had to comment on that part: When People provide tremendous free "value" ... They (IMO) will be more likely for their Prospects to invest in more information/training/advice/etc.

[Added] In fact my Silent Mentor Eben Pagan recommends giving People (something like) $100 worth of value, and then asking for $10 in return.

attract good buyers, they will convert if they think your product has something they need.

free trial people should be a good bunch of people to buy when the bill date comes

Usually the best way it's use advertising networks where managers will help you to find the best performing offers for a site's type.

You can tie in free training focused on promoting your affiliate program but they would need to purchase the product for increased credibility.

  • Maybe your traffic is not very targeted?

Weirdly some users just sign up to anything that is free, perhaps ask for more personal details upon registration, that will filter your applications from the start.

Yes you'll have less users signing up for your free product but the ones that do will be more engaged and more likely to convert.
