Always give just a little more than they expect. I make sure it's not expected, unconditional on them buying (although they bought), and seen as having value.

Every interaction you have with a prospect or buyer creates a story. And if the interaction is notable (for how good or bad it was) that story will be told to others.

It's how you get referrals you didn't have to ask for.

What if they're not stars? What if they are holes poked in the top of a container so we can breath?

If you are shipping things, yourself, toss in a few business cards with every order. People love to show other people the great new thing they bought and are happy to hand your card out to their envious friends.

In fact, if you are shipping things, include a free gift with the package. a short note saying 'I thought this might interest you. Yours with out compliments".

It will stop returns almost entirely, and generate word of mouth. The gift you include doesn't have to be expensive. And you shouldn't advertise "free gift". It needs to be a complete surprise.

This will generate a story they tell their friends. And of course, include a few cards.

But doing something unexpected "above and beyond the call of duty" is what gets you the word of mouth you want.
