After having problems with FireFox getting slow as molasses I was wondering what warriors thought about the Safari browser from Apple?

I have uninstalled FF 3.5 and reinstalled and still seems slow. How are the plugins for Safari?

Love your feedback.

I have many popular browsers installed: Google Chrome, Firefox, Opera, Internet Explorer, Safari. I don't know why your Firefox is slow, mine works fine. Maybe you have too many plugins installed. Safari is good but I prefer Firefox.

John, I've been meaning to ask you this.

Are you one of those people who took a netbook and finagled putting OSX on it?

I've been using Google Chrome for almost everything for close to a year now. I still check sites in FF and IE before launching, but for my personal use its all Chrome.

I like Firefox, but it does need a fair chunk of RAM. I think Safari is a good alternative, but I don't know what plugins you are using; you may find that some of the functions you want are not available.

I think Opera is especially designed to be a lightweight browser, so that might also be worth trying.

I had the same problem with Firefox. I use Safari almost exclusively, with the exception of some sites that just don't work right.

There are some good plugins out there. Look for fanboy's style sheet for ad blocking. (Not a plugin, but works lie adblocker for Firefox.) There is also a del.icio.us plugin that I haven't tried.

On PC, I'm all Chrome now. Thank god for Google.

My vote goes to Firefox. I found it pretty reliable.
I just love all those available add-ons that make my work easier.
Of course, I`m paying attention to use only proven ones.

I don't like Chrome. I tried it when it came out of beta. They said that if one of your browser sessions crashes, it won't affect the other ones.

It wasn't long before it crashed, and all of the sessions crashed.

As I say, this wasn't a beta product, so IMHO it was rushed out.

It's FF 3.5. It just doesn't seem to respond as it should do. Pretty sure it's Mozilla, hopefully they will fix it soon.
If not I'll probably downgrade FF to previous version.

Yes, for some reason FF does seem much slower than Safari, I like safari for regular browsing, but any meaningful stuff like using amazon S3 org FF works really well, one thing I do try to do is to not upgrade every time they ask.

I have found that waiting for a time before going to the next version of FF often serves me well, much less headaches, I am of the opinion that if it aint broke dont fix it...

I agree that jumping into the newest update sometimes is not such a good idea. Funny thing I tried Safari and could not get it to work on my NetBook.... It kept crashing

        I have XP Home version

I have to agree the plug-ins on Firefox are awesome compared to Safari. The huge amount of resources that multi-tabs from Firefox requires does keep me using Safari for anything other than plug-in required surfing (privacy plugins, stealth, Tor, etc.)

I think one of the most recent Mac related magazines had a writeup comparing Safari, Firefox, Opera, etc. The big complaint from the report was Firefox's tendency to get bogged down.

If you are using a Mac, try Camino as an alternate. I am waiting for Chrome for Mac to do some comparison. Anything besides Explorer is my choice honestly.

I am using chrome right now. I had too many problems with all the addons for firefox and that really messed things up for me. My laptop is old and I do not have a lot of memory so I have to periodically reboot the browser when it starts to freeze.

Well after getting tired of slow poke FF I am now using Chrome which beats the pants off FF. Maybe they will fix the problem as I like using several plugins. I disabled all the plugins and it was still sloooooooowwwwww.

and I thought I was the only one having trouble with firefox , guess it's widespread.

I'm not sure what happened but with the most recent updates it's getting slower and hanging more often. I'm about to write off FF and go back to IE.

can't really suggest anything to the OP since I'm a PC. not sure what is good for a mac.

chrome might be a good choice. the PC version is OK.

Safari has only crashed ONE time for me. Firefox crashed dozens of times over a two week period.

I don't know why we have had different experiences.

Never had a problem with other browsers but this is my new NetBook running XP Home so not sure if thats the issue.

Will have to try on my main laptop with XP Pro SP3 but right now it needs a new LCD and reason I opted for a NetBook...

If you're just surfing the net then I vote for Chrome - integrating the Google search into the address bar is awesome, and Chrome is fast. Chrome and Safari use the same engine (WebKit). Some websites still don't recognize Chrome though, eventually this will change.

If you are an Internet Marketer or Web Developer you HAVE to have all 5 major browsers (IE, Chrome, Firefox, Safari and Opera) to check your pages. Too many people make the mistake of not checking, and often they pay the price! If you are serious about your work then it's an essential step. In fact you also need IE 6, 7 and 8 to properly test (which implies multiple computers or virtual PC's).

If you are a Web Developer then Firefox (which I admit is slower) is your best friend, as it has plugins like Firebug that make resolving DOM issues easy. If you program with JavaScript or do AJAX designs it is absolutely essential to use Firefox.

Unfortunately, it seems like FF 3.5+ has well-documented glitches that cause it to takes minutes (!) in some cases to start up, even on fast dual CPU machines. Somehow firefox did something wrong when they launched the 3.5 and up versions, and it is all over the net, you'll see complaints everywhere. Not only is it slow, but it mysteriously crashes every now and then, and it also is a resource hog that takes up a lot of CPU power.

I'm addicted to my FF plug ins though, so I've rolled back to Firefox 3.0.x and that seems to be better with respect to start up and it doesn't freeze or slow down as much. It's funny how FF 2.0 seemed to work just fine, and it got progressively bigger, more complex and SLOWER when it hit 3.0 and up!

For quick browsing these days, I revert to Google Chrome and Opera - they're both lightweight and fast - I think Opera still takes the cake as the most lightweight mainstream browser around. It's a shame how FF is evolving, I truly hope that their 3.7+ version coming up sometime next year will halt this regression in speed...lol!

This is my personal opinion on the browser issue.

Everyone should have several browsers loaded on their computer and ready for use.

The reason being - that if your primary browser is attacked, plays up, or crashes and fails to reload - you still have access to the Web, without resorting to one of your back up computers. Or, if you have no back up, having to go "cap in hand" to a family member or friend, in order to get on-line access in order to resolve the problem.

Remember! Without a browser, you can do very little and you have no "outside" contact apart from basic (non-web based) email.

Returning to the theme of the thread, I find Chrome to be the fastest browser, possibly because it has (at the moment) less "add on baggage" compared to the more established browsers. I do not and will not routinely use IE, due to past problems, although it should still be retained (IMHO) as a temporary access option.

My own browser of choice is the Fox and for best results, have the latest version of FF (or indeed any chosen browser) that is compatible with the operating system running on the computer being used with that chosen browser.

I am very though, careful to only use FF plug-ins that are essential to my requirements, otherwise the speed of loading and delivery can decrease significantly.

      Just my thoughts and opinions.

      Regards,
      Jeff Henshaw.

I've been having terrible problems with FF the last year or so. Seem to get worse with each update, with tons of crashes. I like Safari just fine, it seems to be much more stable than FF, but have had a crash or two with Safari as well. Don't like Chrome as much, and don't use it as much, but can't recall having any Chrome crashes.

My choice is to use Firefox which is certainly faster than Internet explorer. If firefox does crash you can quickly recover your open tags. I also have been using Crome which melds well other Google tools, I use it on a laptop where for some reason I cannot get Firefox to setup or run.

I have IE 8.0 and Firefox 3.5.5 installed on my notebook.

Even though Firefox takes a while to start up, it's more reliable than IE.

I tried Chrome during its early days but didn't quite like it.

I'll continue to use Firefox unless another more reliable web browser was released.

I use mostly Frefox on a Windows pc. But, I have IE, Chrome and Safari installed too. I also had problems with it slowing down. I just bought a new computer and when I installed Firefox I only added a handull of plugins compared to using a lot of plugins previously.

I find with fewer plugins the Firefox browser seems to start up and run faster. I am running 3.5.5.

FireFox does take up memory, it is still better than Silly IE. Chrome kinda slow and look "plain" unlike FF with tons of Theme to choose from. Opera give me the look of the past ...
