What kind of advertising do you think is more effective?
  • Targeted Facebook ads
  • Through influencers and/or creators

Some say targeted ads is cheaper, while others prefer influencers because of their massive follower base. Chime in below.

      Through influencers and creators
It is a form of marketing that puts emphasis on creators who have an impact on potential buyers.

It depends on what you are selling. If it's a commodity, and you have a low price, both will work, I suppose.

But if you sell something that can use an endorsement/review/referral...I would use people with followings. And their following would have to match your core customer.

using multiple streams of sources is the way to get the best results. facebook is the only hottest network right now. it is quite cheaper than other sources of traffic and gets you results because you know your data.

My answer will differ from the previous 2 because, frankly, they don't reflect the same experience I've had with both.

You ask, which one is effective? My question to you is, for what?

Both can be effective, but in my opinion, they have different uses which serve different interests.

The answer to the question, "Which will be more effective for me?" is found by answering these questions:

Does your product have broad appeal, but at a particular moment in a person's life?
    Does that moment occur often?
Are you able to tightly target a group of people, using the available targeting options within Facebook, who are likely to be passionate and interested in what you are selling regardless of what's going on in their life?
If the answer to question 1 is yes and (question 2) the problem doesn't occur very often and question 3 is no, you have to use keyword advertising, and that means Google.

If the answer to question 1 is yes and (question 2) the problem occurs often and question 3 is no, you can use keyword advertising ( Google) and Facebook.

If the answer to question 1 is no and question 2 is no and question 3 is yes, use Facebook advertising.

If the answer to both is no, neither platform is likely to show a positive ROI

If the answer to both is yes, you could use both. This is much less common but still occurs.

Allow me to elaborate with a few examples:

Dentist - Everyone needs a dentist (broad appeal) but only when they NEED a dentist. (a particular moment in their life, like a toothache)

A dentist will use Google, targeting people in his area searching terms like "dentist in San Diego"

There is no way to target people with dental problems via Facebook advertising. You can only target an area, which is going to be expensive because most people seeing your ad will not have an immediate need for a dentist and will therefore, ignore your ad.

Mexican Restaurant - Everyone loves Mexican food. And they're probably open to eating it almost any time, especially if the offer is good or doesn't have to be acted on immediately.

People new to an area also frequently search Google for things like, "mexican restaurant near me".

This is an example of a business that could succeed using both methods, but with a different approach. The keyword search can simply link to the home page of the restaurant. The Facebook ad should be an offer or coupon, targeting people near the restaurant.

Survivalist Gear - If you own a shop that sells gear for survivalists (food, backpacks, knives, fire starters, books, etc), you can easily target this highly passionate group via Facebook ads.

Just like with the Mexican restaurant, you need an irresistible offer (apologies to Mark Joyner), or interesting content on your website to drive traffic to.

Could you also target them with Google, via keywords? Yes and that's also worth testing. But, in my experience, you can be very effective targeting them via Facebook demographics.

I hope this helps. As you can see, there can be gray areas depending on your product. But there are also some very black and white areas in which one method or the other will almost always be ineffective.

As others have said, you first need to define what your advertising is designed to achieve, otherwise you can't measure the effectiveness. Cheap isn't effective if nobody sees the ad. And there's such a thing as being too targeted, especially if you're trying to build a brand.

Rory Sutherland always makes the point that highly targeted advertising merely finds customers: less well targeted creative advertising actually creates customers.

Something about "highly targeted advertising merely finds customers: less well targeted creative advertising actually creates customers." Just didn't ring true to me.

I think it's more "highly targeted advertising merely finds customers: More impactful creative advertising actually creates customers."

Because targeted ads only sell the low hanging fruit, but there is always lots of low hanging fruit still on the tree. The goal is to get all the low hanging fruit.

I think you create customers with more impactful advertising, more dramatic advertising. If your ads are so targeted that it excludes real potential buyers, it's just not great advertising.

Targeting is just one of many factors in advertising. To me it's the drama...the story.

I think it's more that we often don't fully get what our target market is, even when we think we know all about what we're selling. Most research only reveals stated intent or past purchases.

All advertising needs to be impactful - and dramatic doesn't hurt - but widening the net might throw up some surprises we'd otherwise miss. It might even suggest new markets.

God, I love hearing myself talk.

It depends on yoour objective .For example it cost to aquire customers .The customer is first a lead before they become a buyer .which means you might not get a return on your money up fron but on the vack end you will.I would advise you to test and tweak your campaigns .There is no 1 rule that guarantees sales .

    Plenty of detailed wisdom above.

You can have a massive home run with both and a massive nose dive.

Many influencers do not actually study internet marketing but great content attracts.

With FB ads you can tweak and test but you go all in with an influencer so you need to be sure they have excellent engagement.

Follower count does not mean much without that.

Influencers by a longshot if it's the right influencer. In his newsletter, an influencer mentioned me and my Link Building book shot to #3 overnight on Amazon. After that, he started sending me his overflow leads. That was four years ago and we're still making money from it.

I would definitely say Facebook Ads. The beauty about FB Ads is that you can be very precise with your targeting including the use of audiences, interests, location & demographics to target the right prospects. Plus you can control your spend by defining a fixed budget and use a date range to control how long your Ads run. Essentially only spending on Ads where it matters.

I recommend trying both and seeing which ones bring you more orders and $$$. In different scenarios you may get different results - sometimes you may hit more conversions with FB ads and in other cases you may see better results with influencer ads.

Important to keep in mind - for influencer ads you need to make sure you are targeting the right influencer. For FB ads you need to get your targeting right. In both the options you need to have the right sales message and maybe appropriate funnel.

Firstly, let me say an interesting topic. Although I am (6) months late, I have been seeing similar concern with a number of people who wanted to do it right. There is right or wrong here, it really depends on your niche and the type of audience you are targeting. However and based on my own experience with different niches, let me tell you this!

Facebook ads are more effective for a number of reasons. First, Facebook has a huge user base, which means that there is a large pool of potential customers to target.

Second, Facebook allows advertisers to target users based on their interests and demographics, which helps to ensure that the ads are relevant to the audience.

Finally, Facebook ads are relatively affordable, making them a good option for businesses on a tight budget.

In contrast, influencer marketing can be quite expensive, and it can be difficult to find influencers who are relevant to your target audience. Additionally, influencer marketing can be less effective because users are generally more skeptical of advertisements that come from people they follow on social media.

As a result, Facebook ads are generally more effective than influencers.

    I hope this helps!

    Regards,
    Adam

If they're expensive, how much are you spending per influencer? Per month? How much should your budget be allotted to influencer?

If they're less effective, how so?

You definitely do not want to be investing with someone that just friended you on FB or in a Black Hat forum.

Really just good observation will do. That person has huge amount of followers. You check the engagement. Then you check those profiles. Not all private or empty.

Then you send a D.M. requesting rates.

There are also websites out there for purchasing "Shoutouts". Not all are on the same level by any means.

This one will give you a good indication on current rates just by browsing the home page.....

I am in several Social media groups and Instagram followers groups. I can plainly see shady profiles with no friends and new profiles offering services.

That is a dead end road.

It is simple to set up and relatively easy to find people looking for shortcuts.

I've always been a fan of targeted advertising. Facebook Ads gets my vote. You can spec your prospects with fine detail, and get a general view of what your average cost per click will be after you run a campaign. With knowledge of the future like this, and a good converting landing page... you can come up with (or find) an offer that your prospects will likely buy.

I hired a programmer from a forum, (could have been FB) to help me with this...

And as you can see, l put a lot into presentation, but the programmer, was more interested in his girlfriend, and to make a long story short, put me last in his things to do, but wanted payment up front.

In the end the project, which was going to be a WSO here fell through.

This was a joint venture or he wanted to keep the names of customers l obtained or share the FB software file. But not everything online works out. But buyer beware, you don't want an influence who is a drain on your time and money.

I tried some on Fiverr, or they claimed to be able to send my forum link to their large, responsive list, (could have just as easily been FB) and l ended up with someone putting up multiple accounts with the same IP address and no backup verification.

Or the list was thrashed, (if there was one) and it was one person with several aliases.

But don't get me wrong, l have also used Fiverr for other things with great results, but name lists and the like can be risky.
