Stuck on choosing the broadest niche for authority site.

5 replies
I'm wanting to start an authority site which I can promote affiliate products on and get traffic from Facebook page, Pinterest, Twitter, etc, and then eventually traffic from the search engines. I've read the courses 'RankXL' and 'Affilorama' and they both say that the best way to go about it for the long term is to build out an authority site with lots of different sub-niches/sub-categories. This makes sense to me and that's the way I'd like to plan my site, but I get confused when I start thinking about how broad I should go with the niche.

For instance, if I want to do a site on gardening, that's a pretty broad topic and has many different sub-niches that I could write about for years, but should I go even broader than gardening? Where does it end? And if I do go too broad, and I have social media pages for the site, wouldn't people find it strange if they're following a site about gardening as well as something completely different?

So basically, when planning out an authority site, how broad should you go with the niche?

Gave IM a little bit of an attempt a few years ago, but never really took it seriously. Now I've got more time and money, I can give it a proper effort.

    Where does it end? The Universe. You could write about all the possible subjects.

    But you want an authority site.

    So, if you write about gardening and want to broaden up, don't.

    Not before you are an authority site and get all those thousands of visitors a day.

    But, once buoy get them, add another very broad topic, say fishing.

    At that point, none of the things stopping you now will come up as issues.

    For now, just pick a domain that is not too gardening.

    Everythingaboutgardening.com=no
    Gardeningdreams.com=no
    Gardeningkarma.com=no
    Chadsworld.con=yes
    Karmaadog.com=yes
    Seedsofgrateness.com=yes

    And so on.

      My problem is I don't know whether I should go that broad or just make the site about everything to do with gardening (which is a lot). If it's a site about anything and everything to do with gardening, but only gardening (and it's become popular) is that considered an authority site or does a site have to be a lot broader than that, about many different topics to be considered an authority site?

      Also, if I had a Facebook page, email newsletter, etc for my site, wouldn't it make more sense for it to be targeted at one audience (anyone interested in gardening) than targeted at anybody interested in any kind of hobby?

        You cannot be an authority on everything.

        Niche down.

        I would start with a name that is not too specific and bonsai trees. Once I am an authority site, I'd add another topic. Once an authority on the second topic, I'd add a third one. And so on.

        If you want to make money, you need to be the king. Becoming the king if a small island is easier than becoming the king of a country.

    When planning your authority website, I would suggest using
    the "less is more" concept.

    Keep things focused and organized, and avoid going all over
    the place and confusing people.

    First decide what type products you are going to promote.
    Choose four or five quality products, not 75 different affiliate
    offers for your website.

    Do not bombard your reader with all sorts of spammy offers.

    Gardening offers would be for fertilizers, gardening tools,
    watering systems, grow lights, etc.

    After you have decided on that, develop an outline/table
    of contents just as if you are writing a book.

    As a matter of fact, get a book on your topic - vegetables,
    container gardens, flowers, herbs, orchids, marijuana,
    or whatever - use its chapters to guide your development.

    Do NOT copy out of the book.

    Now you can develop your content by writing it yourself
    or hiring somebody to do it for you.

    Once all of that is done you can setup your website.
