can you update me on virus/malware protection

I've been using paid AVG for several years. My subscription expires in a month and I am not going to 're-up'. The price has quadrupled since I first bought it...and last year I remembered to cancel the 'recurring payment' only after it had been paid.

I used the free AVG before going with paid...but haven't paid much attention to what's working best now - and what is worth the cost.

My first 2 years with AVG I paid $50 and that was fine...this year they are asking $197 and I'm not paying it. Added to the price, the number of popups I've had in the past 2 months reminding me to 're-subscribe' to 'make payment' to 'don't forget' have totally ticked me off.

Would welcome suggestions. Are there any free virus programs worth using? I don't mind paying for one but I only need to protect two computers and price should be reasonable.

      There's no laptop or computer that comes with a built-in anti-virus apart from mac, the operating system is the one that comes with a built-in anti-virus. All windows operating systems come with their own anti-virus. It's been more than 15 years now, I've never used any external anti-virus and I use the computer in all my work. Thank you!

    I'm sure I have Windows Defender on my laptop - not sure if I have it turned on or off...have to check on that one.


    Have a good 17" Dell laptop - not replacing it any time soon..

      So, for you to use windows defender, you need to uninstall all or any anti-virus u installed on your pc. You can only use 1 anti-virus @ a time, in my experience as a computer engineer I've seen a lot of people who think by having a lot of anti-viruses then yo pc gets well protected but in reality, it's the exact opposite, it's like taking a lot of drugs thinking you are protecting your self from diseases when in actual; sense you are simply poisoning yourself.

    I realize this comment won't solve your problem right now because you're not looking to update your computer, but maybe in the future...

    I've used Chromebook for a few years and never worry about virus protection because they're very safe. I imagine that's why they give them to kids in school.

    I can do pretty much anything anyone else can do that uses windows.

    Can't run Adobe Photoshop but I realized that was over kill anyways when I could just use canva.

    But I love it. Chromebox also.

    Just my opinion and something to consider in the future

    Jus' gotta distinguish between the marketin-crazy affiliate blahgs fine tooned to recommend the one slooshin pulsin' 'em regulah commission an' mebbe more objective stuffs dished by experts who jus' wanna tellya stuff.

    Way I see it, prolly the top 5 antivirus people you heard of do a pretty good jahb.

    AVG is one, but if'n you gaht gripes, go see what evrywan else says.

    Ooze your marketin' exotica down their payment option & feecher buckets till you hit the sweetest Happy/Dollah balance.

    You might check with your internet provider in case they offer anything for free as part of your service. I get McAfee free for 5 devices with my high speed internet account.

    I run basic windows defender straight across the board on all of my computers, and have done so for years. I can think of one time I had to load Malwarebytes into my network to correct an issue.

    Programming by nature is very linier right? So a "Virus" is going to do a number of things in order, and one of the first is check for virus protection. If you dont have any, it tends to stop viruses dead in their tracks.

    Basically "Virus Protection" is a magnet for viruses - as ironic as that is.

    Turn window defender on and you will be fine, and dont forget to REMOVE AFG from your computer

    Running a last scan before uninstalling AVG - and Windows Defender is activated. Will also check with internet provider but not sure I need anything more.


    I keep malwarebytes updated just in case I need it - and RKill saved my bacon a couple times on my desk top computer.

      A little secret... put malwarebytes on a USB stick and keep it updated that way. When you run into issues on your computer you can then run Malwarebytes off of the USB and the "virus" that has taken over your computer wont effect the operation. I have yet to see a virus that "looks" for USB drives to hinder Virus protection. But I see regularly where the virus will check if it is run from the hard drive.

    All windows OS comes with built-in anti-virus and it's the best so far, very effective and very easy to use, just look for windows defender which can be accessed through ''windows security''.

    I personally have been using it for more than 10 years, I've never bought or paid for any anti-virus and I'll never because, in my more than 10 years of working with computers, windows defender has been doing a tremendous job so far, impressive and never lets u down.

    Good suggestion....a couple years ago I had to use rkill and to get it past the virus required downloading it into a file with a fake name.



    That particular virus would not allow me to use malwarebytes - had forgotten about that one....will take the advice!

    If you're on Windows 10/11, Windows Defender is more than enough. It's lightweight, free, and most of all gets updates from Microsoft.

    I've used AVG in the past back when I was on Windows XP. It was passable as an antivirus, but the threat alerts can be quite annoying.

    I've used AVG in the past back when I was on Windows XP.
    I tend to stick with something as long as I haven't problems with it or the price doesn't go crazy. In this case, the price went crazy.


    I've uninstalled AVG and activated Defender and will keep updated malwarebytes....on a stick. (I watched a Jeff Dunham video last night).

    EDIT: added on 11/24.....


    The day before the subscription with AGV expired I got a popup from AVE offer me protection for both computers for $40/yr. A lesson in marketing? Or am I 'different' from other buyers?


    For several years I paid $50/yr for the coverage and only when it almost doubled in price did I cancal it. The last two months of my membership were frequent popups reminding me 'about to expire' to the point where I uninstalled the program. That 'pushiness' was a total turnoff for me.



    Had they kept the price where it was or at least close, I would have purchased without stopping to think about it. Seems to be a 'smart tactic' that wasn't so smart in the end.
