Ten Effective Tactics to Defeat Internet Trolls

A new article on Search Engine Journal says that trolls may be the bane of the internet, but they shouldn't ruin your day. Learn to purge online trolls and prevent them from returning.

The trolls have moved out of their caves and onto the internet. Unlike the mythological creatures of early Scandinavian folklore, online trolls are real, and dealing with them is never a fun experience. An internet troll, as defined by Wikipedia, is:

"...a person who posts inflammatory, insincere, digressive, extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community (such as a newsgroup, forum, chat room, or blog), with the intent of provoking readers into displaying emotional responses, or manipulating others' perception."
An internet troll is someone who takes great pleasure in being an insufferable jerk online. The more people they tick off, the better. Trolls thrive on sarcasm and insults, and they've been around for as long as the internet has existed. Unfortunately, the trolls of today have escalated into a much more malicious force of hate than the original jokesters that were prevalent back in the '90s. Now, 41% of Americans have experienced some form of online harassment.

In the full article, you'll find a list of tips to add to your arsenal, so you're ready to handle the nonsense right away and protect your peace of mind. But how do you know you're dealing with a troll in the first place?

Warning Signs You're Dealing with an Internet Troll

Just some of the warning signs that you're dealing with a troll include:
  • Blindness to evidence: Trolls are notorious for ignoring facts and either doubling down on their stance or redirecting to a new topic altogether.
  • Name-calling: Internet trolls aren't known for their creativity. They'll often latch onto the latest trending insult and use it in every situation. Hello, "Karen."
  • Topic redirects: This is an old-school trolling technique that's still around today on chats and forums. Trolls enjoy making off-topic remarks to try and distract posters from the discussion. They'll also post unrelated images or memes.
  • Condescending tone: "Why you mad, bro?" Trolls love to stoke the fire and then act dismissive when people become angry, which only triggers more frustration. And they know it.
  • Overexaggerating: While most people use words that aren't absolute, there's no middle ground for trolls. Everything has to be on the extreme end of the spectrum. Instead of saying "often" or "sometimes," they'll say "always" or "never."

Yahoo used to be a Mega Troll Farm.

Yahoo was/is also one of the Biggest Trolls on the Internet.

For example Ak47 Gun Glamorizing Articles non stop until there was a shooting almost daily then they stopped entirely.

Now they have extremely restrictive and selective commenting.

But if you really observe....the way they place an article...feature it...allow comments or not, find some obscure blog nobody ever heard of and slap it in your face because it has the Headline that Yahoo wants in your face.

It is as much or even more an attempt at manipulation than trolling.

Well, I personally enjoy argueing with trolls. It is a kind of a work out in the gym. I forget about all of my current problems when I get involved into absolutely pointless disscussions with trolls. So, guys, take it easy. THey will never harm you. Just try to derive pleasure from communication with them.

Don't you think it defeats the purpose?

"Don't feed the trolls" as they say.

If I respond to a troll it is not in an aggressive manner and doing so takes their power away .If you respond negatively you are giving them the power and control tgey want .Another thing you can do is ignore them.

Great tips for defeating internet trolls, however I got used to think that they should be defeated by their arms actually. You should troll them as well as they troll or you. However, if you're not fond of conflicting with people and you prefer to stay sideways, then you should just ignore them and by this movement you can show your advantage over them. It won't work effectively until you start understand that they're just energetic vampires. They like to make you pissed off actually. You should do the same. It's the best instrument for me to defeat such lifeless people.

  • I found not feeding the trolls to be most effective. Trolls want your attention to feel important. If people can see you reacting to them, it legitimizes that belief. By not giving them a moment of your time, you're diminishing their importance.

thanks for this post. Does anyone have personal threshold they wait for a troll to cross before deciding to respond? Some troll posts I just ignore however when it starts to to resemble a personal attach or weaponized rhetoric the urge to respond is just too great!

    thanks,
    Pat

If someone is hiding under anonymity it does not take much courage to say anything and everything.

But you never know who is a professional hacker with a mental disorder.

That is the position I take. Challenging trolls will be exactly that to them a challenge.

I like to stick with facts because it is nothing personal at that point then let it go.

During the GameStop Stock surge there were Wall Street brokers pretending to be just part of the Reddit Rebels.

The trolling is usually done with fake accounts. There are hundreds of fake accounts created in Twitter these days and if the trollers decide to attack an individual they do so agressively. Their motives are always malicious and they are meant to harm your online identity. It is of no use communicating with them as they will hardly listen to your words.

Since they are fake accounts it may be possible that only one person is operating multiple of them simultaneously.

Their main objective is to disrespect you, make fun of your views - right or wrong, and make you feel disgraced. It is always good to stay away from them and not to reply to any of their comments in any social media platform.

Yes, well why would anyone troll using their real account, right?

Trolls and Copywriters have alot in common. Apologies to my Copy Warriors.

But both get inside your head.

They find out what triggers you, and use words/images to puppeteer your emotions. .

You do not stand a chance.

The worst thing you can do is to interact with a troll, it's like trying to be positive talking to a very negative person. Just ignore instead.
