Windows 7 YES/NO? which version

Personally I'm waiting, I'm still on Vista but I'm going to wait and see what happens. 7 looks good though, only heard good things.

Windows 7 is the best MS OS since Windows 2000, stable and fast. I have been running the Beta Version for months and am currently awaiting my free update disk now.
Any version is good, but Ultimate is over kill unless you need BitLocker

Have already upgraded (upgraded day it came out), and think it's pretty good. Many times better than Vista.

Still primarily use Ubuntu though.

I did a clean install of windows 7 its nice ..i wanted bit-locker....so I got the ultimate version..I never had any problems with vista though.....

I got the original windows 7 ultimate a month ago the release - being an msdn member really helps . It's great man, install a fresh copy and don't upgrade from vista.

I'm really glad I did not jump on the Vista wagon when it first came out. I've heard nothing but problems with that OS system.

I'll wait until there is more user feedbck on Windows 7 before I go from XP.

BTW XP so far has been the best OS system I've used out of all the previous Windows OS sytems. Never have had any issues, very stable.

I'd like to hear how Windows 7 is better than Vista as far as stability and features?

I tend to wait for 2nd/3rd release of any microsoft product, gives them a chance to sort out the bugs that should have been sorted before they released the original product

I have the 64-bit professional addition of windows 7.

It's incredible and I've experienced no problems with it. It uses drivers from Vista and sometimes even XP (even on 64-bit) if you're running really out of date hardware, so there's no driver problems that I know of.

The OS is extremely stable and I haven't noticed any instabilities (with this newer hardware. When I tried 7 with extremely out of date hardware, it was a little unstable at times, but that was because I was using an old nforce3 motherboard that could barely handle 64-bit calculations).

While playing games, my framerates are still extremely high and in study, IM, and art, my workflow is just as steady as ever (perhaps even more?).

The search functions on the start menu and browsing windows and really great and save me a lot of time and I've recently discovered the sticky notes feature. It's small, but I use it all the time now.

I also skipped Vista and stayed with XP, but I can definitely say I enjoy windows 7 a lot more. I say move to windows 7. You won't be disappointed.

I wish I could say more, but I have somewhere to be.

I just said screw it, and now I use Fedora.

Funny you should ask about Windows 7, I'm currently "playing with the beta version following an anouncement from work where we have been told we are upgrading to Windows 7 in the next 12 months....

I have a laptop at the moment which has Windows XP, Windows Vista and now Windows 7 as a triple boot - bit geeky, yes, but then I enjoy messing around.

I love XP and have been trying to convert to Vista but can't quite bring myself to going the whole hog. However Windows 7 is a different story. I love it, It seems to bring the best of XP and Vista all in one operating system.

I've been trying to find courses so I can learn a bit more and have been buying all the latest computer magazines which all feature "mini how to guides".

I can only use the 32 bit versions but if you can you should go for 64 bit (see post above). The Home version as ever is really the basic version like Vista Home and if you will only be doing stuff for your own use, this should suffice.

Ultimate is obviously the best and allows you to do a lot more, but it appears to be more "business orientated" with networking options, encryption tools and the like.

Professional version seems to be somewhere in between although at the moment Ultimate seems to be cheaper !

For me I would go for Ultimate version as it offers everything you need and more if you want for the future.

I know new operaing systems always have "minor issues" but WIndows 7 seems really stable and there are plenty of Vista drivers which are "apparently" acceptable until Microsoft can create specific drivers in the future.

Sorry if I've waffled a bit but I really am enjoying finding out more about Windows and whatit can do.

Is it a memory hog like Vista?

I really don't get why you all need to upgrade unless you have software that only uses Win 7. Come on now...seriously do you REALLY need it? What you should be doing is downgrading to XP. New software = More problems / more money. Fact.

Saying that, I want another car. Getting bored of my TDI Golf!

Windows 7 Ultimate Edition.

BitLocker offers excellent protection if you need it.

But of course before you upgrade. ALWAYS HAVE BACKUPS.

Windows 7 has an XP mode built in to make it work better with some of the older software. that is always a plus.
I got a free upgrade when i purchased my new computer, but I'm still waiting for it.When I worked as a computer technician we would always wait until the first service pack became available before upgrading to a New O/S for stability reasons.

Glad to hear this one is more stable,but dang what took them so long?

Maybe I'll get v7 when my computer breaks down and I'm forced to buy one with it already installed, but other than that, I see no reason to upgrade. If it ain't broke, I don't fix it.

Just stick with windows xp, it's a light weight OS and you don't have to worry about complications should you use software that is not 64Bit compatible.

Currently using XP but plan to have Windows7 on new computer I'll be getting this month.

Will I have problems using the software I currently use on my new XP machine on my new Windows macine? Will I need to use the "XP mode"
in windows7 on my old software? Should my old software run at similar speeds or faster on the new machine?

I don't want to discover that I have to upgrade all my software to to the lastest versions. That would be pretty expensive.

Been using W7 for over a month now and all what I can say is wow!
The best operating system that Microsoft has come out with so far.
Im running the Ultimate version but any W7 version runs absolutely smoothly!

I recommend going to 7. I wouldn't say (like a lot of people) OMG 7 is so good but it's a pretty decent OS. But then again, I don't really see what makes an OS so wonderful... it does what it does and there's (seemingly) not much more they can do to really spice them up.

Been running windows 7 for a short period of time now, i like it so far. Looks better much faster. I got the same feeling when I installed windows 7 that I got when I installed windows xp upgrading from windows me.

YES to windows 7. I'm using the home premium version and it works smoothly. Anything is better than vista really!

I´m using Windows 7 Pro.It works really well.Vista was just an "upgraded version" of XP.

i'm not into making this a PC vrs. Mac ad, however I had the same decition to make last May:

I never installed Vista on my own computers (got 6 of them), because my friends / co-workers had so much trouble with it.

However I was still using 2 hours a week just to clean my XP machine, running tasks to keep it speedy, restarting after "upgrades", etc etc.

My computers crashed (at least got to the point where something didn't work) and had to be reinstalled at least once a year.

etc etc.

My friends using Mac didn't have these issues.

This May i bought a Macbook Pro. Mostly I use Mac OSX with programs on it, but I also run XP in Parallells (allowing me to run all applications in the internet marketing world that does not run on Mac OSX).

Since May I have used appr. 2 hours (for all the 6 months time) cleaning up my Mac. I restart it every 14 day or so, "just for the sake of it". It doesn't run slow. I've never had problems editing a video, nor anything else. It backups every hour (automatically), and my life has become so much easier "PC-wise".

I still use some time every month to fix computers: My brothers, my dads and some of my collegues. But my and my wife's Mac run without problems.

The result is:
My time has come much more productive: I do more in less time. :-)

However I've heard very much positive about Win7. And my impression is: If you run Vista, move to Win 7. If you run XP, maybe you should wait for Win7 to become even more stabile?
