Russell Brunson Acquires Dan Kennedy's "Magnetic Marketing" Company

Just seen this email in my inbox this morning...

----------
"A VERY IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT!...

I am here today to announce that ownership of Magnetic Marketing (formerly known as "GKIC") has moved hands to someone who has built a $150+ Million dollar a year company built on the foundations of "Magnetic Marketing."

The new owner has lived for a long time inside of 'Planet Dan,' watching me speak, sitting in masterminds with me, and applying everything he learned.

In fact, he first signed up for the No B.S. Marketing Letter on 6/12/2005. Two years later on 7/2/2007 he successfully climbed the GKIC "Ladder of Success" joining the Titanium Mastermind where he mastered and applied 'Kennedy methods' to his then small business.

The new owners name is Russell Brunson, and his company ClickFunnels is a software company that was built to help entrepreneurs to execute on 'Kennedy' style marketing quickly.

Besides Russell proclaiming himself as my #1 superfan, this move in ownership makes a lot of sense as his audience has over 5 million subscribers who are using our marketing methods, without knowing where most of them originated from, and my audience has many successful members already using ClickFunnels to run their online businesses."
----------

Pretty big deal. What are your thoughts?

Deep respect, but what's there to talk about?
Take overs happen all the time.
In terms of the training, Russell/CF is not my thing. I joined a couple of years ago to see what all the fuss was about, but the CF "celebrity culture" style of delivery, turns me right off. After a few days of watching and listening I found it to be convoluted and confusing - and I'm no newbie!
Undeniably, the lad's done well, so good on him.

The history. Dan Kennedy/Bill Glazer did a lot of the early work in the IM/consulting field and in building the networking events so common today. Some members, particularly in the Offline subforum, belonged to these groups. I myself know the 8-year past president of GKIC. I began studying Dan Kennedy as a copywriter in the mid-90s when I was around 20 and he was self-publishing books I found in the college and local libraries. He hadn't partnered with Bill Glazer yet. The Brunson-MM partnership has been ongoing for awhile and I suppose Dan took the opportunity to cash out. That's a good move at this age and health.

The company went from Dan and Bill to others, and that didn't go so well. Then some time ago he bought it back and reinstilled the values and direction until his health issues showed up. In the past year or so I hadn't heard much until this a month ago.

Personally, I find "knowing where we are and how we got here" to be important in any field I profess to be involved in.

I have no real insights into the sale of Glazer Kennedy.

But I have been to lots of Kennedy events, and have almost all his books and courses, dating back 30 years. (E-bay is my friend)

When he gives a presentation, even when it's obviously to sell something...his insights and understanding of how marketing works are profound.

When he would speak, and I was in the audience, I had two sets of notes. One set was taking what he was saying, and using the principles to apply to my own business. The other set of notes was on what he was doing to sell an idea..or a product..

With all the other speakers, I was just taking notes on how they were selling.

With Kennedy himself gone, I suspect that the value of the company will be in the list, and past buying history.

I can only speak for myself. The majority of a minor fortune I have made selling, is attributed to the fact that I eventually incorporated marketing principles and strategies to my selling.

The vast majority of what I learned about marketing, I got from Kennedy, either live or from one of his information products.

By the way, you said "everytime someone has bought dan kennedy's stuff. it never turned out well.".

What does that even mean? You have the results of every time anyone bought something produced by Dan Kennedy? You know what happened after they studied the materials? Always? My God, that must be a terrible responsibility, collecting all that information, calling all those customers. I applaud your dedication.

  • that's peculair. because everytime someone has bought dan kennedy's stuff. it never turned out well. plus how is russell going to do this. sense magnetic marketing is mostly an offline thing. he wants to promote his online clickfunnels bs by getting his customers to buy magnetic marketing stuff and implement it with clickfunnels websites. we shall see how this turns out in the coming couple of years.

I don't follow what Russell is doing very closely, but I wonder if his crowd will connect to the DK stuff. Plus, as mentioned, it doesn't appear that DK is going to have a lot to do with this.

Dan himself has said that a lot of the value of celebrity-based companies has to do with the head guy. And once that guy goes, the company often goes with it.

For a good parallel to this, look at Dave Ramsey. He's been trying hard to find somebody to take over as far a draw and just hasn't been able to do it. And younger people don't connect to his gruff style, so he's not bringing in a new audience as fast as he's losing his current one.

i just got an e-mail from Dan Kennedy/Russell Brunson.

They are selling a combination of Kennedy's print newsletter and Brunson's newsletter. You get a bunch of free downloads, and books (from both of them) to start your subscription. It's $99 a month. You do pay $35 to cover shipping to start off.

Kennedy says he's writing much of the newsletter himself. And he's now speaking live again.

        Shipping?

And Handling? How quaint. Old world. Even geezerish isn't it? Yet I still love getting those things in the mailbox. After 25 years of digital, Ol Dan is going the paper route.

Maybe I'll fire up the presses and order some new trees be planted as I recycle the old, what goes around comes around.

Wonder if he will offer a binder, or a certificate of authenticity too? HA!

to be fair $35 probably covers the cost of fulfillment. There are several books. My guess is that the package will weight about 5-8 pounds. And they will use a fulfillment house, I'm sure.
So they will acquire a customer for free.

I didn't buy the offer, but I'm assuming there are at least two upsells (before you order), so there is money in the front end.

The old chestnuts get pulled out and used, because they work.

A certificate of authenticity (I know you're joking) would be insulting to you or me...but to a newbie? It makes them feel secure.

Just like the implied limited supply, implied outrageous demand, and a time restraint are all things that make me gag. But I know if I don't do them, sales suffer.

The only reason I didn't send for it is that $99 a month is more than twice what I used to pay, and Kennedy spends way too much space talking about his political views.

And it's not what I'm paying for.

I thank you for showing us a modern view, maybe one held by a majority of millennials and a lot of newbie Internet Marketers.

Everything you say, manuals, books, courses are COPYRIGHTED. They are property which belongs to someone else.

I suppose those with this free mindset will drive by an orchard and pick the fruit without paying for it. My Ol Uncle used to shoot (at) poachers who tried to steal his corn.

This is a disheartening thought for those of us who have invested in knowledge, learning and experience and create Intellectual Property which generates income.

We warriors often discuss information marketing, and this subject comes up, how to protect your work from the thieves of the world.

Sure, we all like our freebies, and there is plenty of that available online.

But to openly seek other people's work for free, to a Warrior marketer, it is reprehensible.

There is a black hat forum which mirrors this one, somewhat. Maybe you would be better suited to join there (have to google it, I won't provide a link).

Congrats to Russell. I was just listening to GKIC small business marketing hour episodes on Youtube 2 days ago, and have to say i miss Dan's no BS style of teaching. I think Russell will take this brand and continue to progress in the right direction - and integrate it with his click funnels teaching. Certainly something to keep an eye on.

Hopefully it doesn't get lost like Corey Rudl's internet marketing center. But only time will tell.
