You begin thinking about Elon Musk and his upcoming satellite phone.

I think there are alot of variables for each individual.

Is there livelihood primarily online or are they already a minimalist.

Challenges would be different if everyone was effected or just a certain region.

Customers and clients would understand if they are also cut off. But if regional only.. people may be expecting your presence like normal and wondering why you are missing in action.

I guess what would you do would go hand in hand with what COULD you do.

Depends on your resources, networks etc and any other means to communicate.

I think they still make newspapers and you did not mention landlines.

You may end up catching up on reading and physical interactions after you eventually calm down.

I imagine some businesses would see an influx of new business with people being forced to unplug.

I was thinking it'd be a global shutdown.

I'm sure satellite phones would still work.

Without the internet nothing works and major cities would turn into the purge.

Man if the internet were to shut down for a week I probably won't be effected economically due to the short duration but anything other than a week would certainly set me back being as though internet marketing is now my livelihood but I'd probably resort to off line promotion and if that fails I'm never to prideful to get a 9-5 until things resume back to how they once were .

Take a break - do something else. It's a great time to write tons of content to add/use when the internet re-opens.

Writing without the interruptions online can be very productive.

Or just to do something totally removed from the internet....

I think it is a very good question because nowadays we are so involved in the internet that the truth is that this question makes us think again, although I think it would be a good time to enjoy the freedom that gives you not to be glued to a device or the internet all day.
Take advantage of that time to enjoy the family, friends ...

I hope your not planning on our generations under 50 to pay for your retirements or your medical care. The generations before you left school systems that still functioned and infrastructure and very low prices. And no debt. And you could work part time and pay for a college degree.

If the generations under 50 are so bad it because their parents practiced recreational divorce after spending their youths practicing recreational drug use. The generations who got bored with their imagination and started drinking and smoking at 12 years old. And listening to music that only sounds great after you listen to it on acid a few times

On a brighter note the wealth transfer from wealthy boomers parents to their children and grandchildren is staggering and statistically 80 percent of the money received by the inheritors will be spent within two years.

So there will be a lot of money to be made selling to those younger generations. Where after retirement people tend to cut spending.

And the different way people spend money they feel they didn't work for.

Naturally, this would be a shock at first.
But after you realize it, it could turn out to be a pleasant blessing.

In this week of newfound freedom, you can do things that would otherwise be completely lost in everyday life.

In my particular case, I would do a lot of soul-searching and work on my spiritual enlightenment. I would meditate a lot and think about my life, about my goals, about my dreams, about things I still want to experience.

Furthermore, I would read a lot and try to educate myself with the help of books. You could also use the time to create content if you work in internet marketing.
It would also be worthwhile to be in nature a lot during this week and to take some time off.

I think in general this week would be a good week for mankind, some would realize it immediately and some would realize it only with a lot of distance that it was something good and wish for this unique chance back.

It really depends on if we knew it would be coming back online in a week.

If it suddenly went down all around the world, the world would become very chaotic with people freaking out.

If we knew it was only down for a week, I would watch DVDs and play video games with my kids. I'd chill out basically. I might create some content on the PC - courses, audios etc. But no social media would be great.

The idea that the internet shutting down for a week...Oh I would spend more time with the family, or listen to the radio and so on...

The implications of the Net shutting down for a week, I think reaches a bit deeper than your own personal life...

There would be no Gas at gas stations, there would be no groceries at the grocery store. Airlines would come to a halt... no hotels... no credit cards.. a whole lot of no no no no and no.

You couldn't even goto the bank and withdrawal money.

This isnt really a cutesy cutesy kind of question... Its not what would you do?, its more in line with How would you survive? and are you prepared for such a thing to happen?

One simple solar storm, and THIS could be a reality...

And this isnt me being a dooms day kind of guy... its just kind of a reality that COULD happen... and I dont think its a matter of IF, it comes down to when.

It would effect the United States far more than the rest of the world as we are so dependent on the complexity the internet allows. But the smartest people those able to turn thing back on would be the most vulnerable. Unless they are grabbed by the military.

And even after thing turn on the cascade of deaths will grow . The majority of the world where the electricity goes out periodically during the day and the technology dependence is not fully trusted. Will fair better. But there will most likely be a slippage into a pre industrial state and rapid decline in population after.

We are seeing the effects of a breakdown of globalization. Shutting down the internet to highly technology dependent populations is basically killing a majority of the population.

Although I get the question was lighthearted, a shut down being an annoyance for a few days, I think savidge4 is closer to a reality.

Day one I would send alerts (via sat phones, hoping they still work along with cb/ham radio) or cell if it is working...the family alert, something like the rooster crows at midnight lets them know the bunker is being prepared.

By day 3 I would expect my peeps to be on their way, probably via car or horse...

By day 7 we'd be hunkered down and tuned in, popping heads out like a whack a mole game to get a feel for the situation...

But then, I am a doom and gloomer, albeit an optimistic half full YEA kind of guy...or in other words, I'd be OK, but the rest of you playing games..they could quickly become the hunger games.

Or, just binge eat cheetos and chips.

Since my work is impossible without the Internet, I would most likely read books or play Monopoly or another board game with friends. And then, when I was fed with it, I'd just get in my car and drive to some old hotel in the woods near a lake where they still accept cash. Or maybe just ride my bicycle.

While I have to agree with many here - especially GordonJ and savidge4's responses... I find it a bit humoring that I took 7 years - went off-grid and commercial fished (*old school - cheap Jon boat, swamp lands, and 12' -16' cast nets. We were 'living off the land' - nothing illegal (*although today - so many rules, makes it barely legal or profitable) - and catching and selling 300 -500lbs of fish on good days!

However, we still had a base of operations - a place to store our goods, shower, cook, etc - and, we had a power inverter, gas, freezers, and full comfort suite - including coolers full of food and the means to grill, griddle, or cook on stick over open campfire!

So, even then, we had phones and a connection on the inside - while we were living outside the considered norms... I loved it. It was archaic and there were disciplines to be learned -even in those humble environments.

I agree, first we get loved ones hunkered down, prepare for the chaos of all-in-whom couldn't live a day without spoils or what most people take for granted - like a Golden McDicinal arches drive-thru as their primary hunting skills...

The idea is not easily dismissed - but I would be fine in a remote forest as would 2 of my 3 children and maybe my wife - she's gotten older, weaker, and I am not sure how well she'd sustain - in say; we are going to the forest or the mountain (*to higher ground) as a means to diminish the threat such an event would create - out of desperation.

I certainly do not welcome such and idea - I tought my 2 daughters how to survive, light fires, catch fish, cook, and sustain in an environment close to what I would envision as being "THE PLAN" - I have for such frightening reality check!

I mean c'mon - Edison "lit up" JP Morgan's home with incandescent lights on June 8th, 1882 - while Edison didn't display the technologies(?) to the public until Sept. 4th, 1882 - we (as a whole) didn't even have light bulbs or electricity as a norm until only 140 yers ago, and look at the DEPENDENCIES created and the costs associated since that innovation became available!

It's brilliant - and equally damaging!!!

Power grids rely on the internet. So do supply chains. Medical, grocery, textile, etc. The internet is a lot more than Tik Tok and Instagram and such. Navigation systems, in cars, boats etc, rely on the internet. So do POS systems all throughout retail. We could go on.

It has nothing to do with IOT. The internet has been powering the economy since long before people had personal computers or smartphones. Plus the military too.

  • If it's only a week, the first thing I'd do would be to check my pantry and make sure we're stocked up. Then do some grocery shopping to buy whatever we're lacking. Then I'd go home and relax.

    Why would I do this?

Because something similar happened here in Davao a few weeks ago. We didn't have internet for 2 whole days. We knew it was coming back, but we weren't sure when. During that time, everything was cash only. Getting anything done that required payment was more problematic because we couldn't do bank transfers. Any available bandwidth was given to essential services first.

The 1st 14 hours were nerve-wracking, but after that, it was okay. I just pretended I was back in the 80s.

So, that's why I would definitely try to find another workplace. No doubts, that it would take lots of time to me, because the skills which I own and those ones which are needed in particualr place mi ght be different. However, the ones who have never tried, have never gained experience and never were successful I think. We have to know how to go along with the circumstances even if they are so severe.

That's possible and it will definitely create worldwide chaos. If you rely heavily online, it's great to have plan B, C and so on in place for that. However, it's not "only YOU" you'll be greatly affected by your environment and services that you yourself depends on like basic commodities as we will be expecting food shortages due to logistic, communications and inventory issues, etc. You may be ready for that but the world isn't, this is a collective issue not individual.

I think for many People having a week unplugged would be a good thing. (Especially those spending way too much time "gaming" etc.)

Anyway, I would do what I sometimes do ― simply visit Family and enjoy the company and being offline for some time. Something I learned from Eben Pagan is that taking regular breaks like that can actually make People more productive ― because they come back "refreshed" and with a clear mind.

I would take my operation offline. Scope out some magazines in niches to see the competition and see which ads are in there month after month... then test my luck. I've always been a fan of offline direct marketing.

What an interesting topic! I had to gave it a little bit of deep thinking before commenting. Firstly, I would lose my job. Most people nowadays rely on the Internet for work, whether it's for research, communicating with clients or customers, or managing team projects.

Secondly, I would have to find a new way to entertain myself. I'm a big fan of streaming TV shows and movies, so without the Internet I would have to find a new hobby.

Thirdly, The Internet is my main source of news, so without it I would be completely in the dark about what's going on in the world.

Finally, yes we all will be affected, but on the other hand we will get close to one another, as families and friends, newspapers will find their way back to people as a reliable resource for information, but you said it's a week, so I guess we will see more creative ways of thinking out of the box. Mankind has always been driven to create, we will figure out a way to survive, because that's what we do.

    Regards,
    Adam

You never really know. If it's just for a week, I would spend more time outdoors and reading from my library. I still love physical books.

This is why it's important to make use of the time, opportunities and resources we have. For a longer period of time, I would probably start growing more food in my backyard.

Depends where it will be shut down. Worldwide or in a single country? If the last, I'll relocate to another region. I have thousands of customers and even I week w/o Internet will sufficiently hurt them. So I just can't afford staying in a country that is not online more than 24 hours.

It would be great, cause people need to get "detoxification" from the digital era for some time, hang out with friends and family, having a quality conversation at the dining table without checking their social media for a while.

  • I worry all the time because that would mean I won't have a way to work! I work from home, so this would be the end of me.

If work isn't an issue, I'd definitely pack my things and get ready for an adventure in Siargao!

  • I'm framing the question from a perspective of a city-wide (or bigger), week-long (or longer) Internet downtime.
    • Immediately after that happens, I'll carefully study the more serious problems behind that event, i.e. Did a single entity or a particular network of entities cause the problem? If so, then how did they do it? And why were they able to do that?
    • And once I get sufficient verifiable data that helps me draw viable conclusions, then I'd build plans on how to resolve the problem as quickly as possible, and how to significantly reduce the likelihood of getting caught in the same issue in the future.

Joking. Of course, it will be unpleasant anyway. My livelihood is tightly connected with the internet. The shut down will disappoint me without a doubt. In case of such a situation - I would devote the time to myself and my family. I can live for a week on my savings without any problem.

A week? Um..hate to break it to you, but that's not savings. It's what most people would just call wages.
