I have an Etsy shop where nearly half my sales are one item. I want to start a website selling that item as an alternate to Etsy.

However, domain name I wanted is taken. Example, hamster pads.com. That website doesn't sell pads; guy loves hamsters and talks about their care.

I do have domain names hamsterpad.com or pads4hamsters.com.

Which should I use?

I'd use the first one ...simpler is better in my opinion.

...and I'm pretty sure one of them is a pigeon.

Yep as long as the domain give a great indication of what it's about with or without a keyword and someone can hear it on an elevator and easily go look it up later you are good to go.

You still have your tagline for the website that many will see in Google Search.

I'd go with the first one for sure... but, if you already pay for hosting, theoretically you could use both and maybe test price points.

    E. Brian Rose back in the day created 3 hearing aide websites and tested 3 price points and basically dominated the online market for awhile before the level of competition there is today online.

I would suggest there is a bit more to making this selection. I would use: ( https://namechk.com ) and look for the URL that has matching social accounts.

Trust me I am a firm believer in websites... but I would use that as informational and not sell from it. I would find a brandable name ( URL and social media names match )

My next move now that you have Etsy...I would get your Facebook account, and start a Facebook marketplace store...once that is in place you then get your Instagram name, and then create an Instagram store - it brings in all the information from your Facebook store.. takes minutes.

At this point... I would place your items for sale on eBay. I happen to have a thread that walks you through the ins and outs of that ( https://www.warriorforum.com/warrior...days-ebay.html )

and THEN I would develop your website... I would have articles on how to care for the pad ( cleaning ) etc.. BUT I again would not sell from this platform.... I would be like any other BIG product and list places to buy ( Etsy, Facebook, Instagram, and eBay )

You can get from 1 platform you are selling on to 4 in total in probably less than a few days - I know what I am doing and it would be a few hours.

So, why I suggest this... ALL of the platforms I have suggested have built in traffic. You could literally make sales the same day you list your items. Your website on the other hand would have NO traffic, and it would take time to develop it... there could literally make no sales for Months.

Im not saying don't build a website, I am saying leverage the platforms that have existing traffic of people that BUY, and diversify that way.

    Hope that Helps!

My advice is to keep it short and simple.
    Keep it meaningful.
Avoid hyphen, underscore, numbers. Use only alphabets.

You can also try to google for synonyms of your desired name for more ideas.

In my experience, having a great domain does not mean anything.

What's important is selling a great product to the right audience.

Your sig mentions real wealth and a domain is a real asset an buying an selling them can be very lucrative my friend.

When an if you ever sell your baby/website you have more value an leverage.

One winner could make more than most entreprenuers make in several years.

hamsterpad.com is better... nobody really uses digits and hyphens in their domain names (I'm talking about brands).
One thing to notice... make sure you domain doesn't get easily confused with another domain name so people by accident don't visit that site.

That's really good that you got a domain with two real WORDS! It's amazing how people will remember domains, not only with words in them but also without numerals in them. Take for example "4" some might think it's spelled by "four or for. " The numerals can be trouble.
Good luck and no trouble ahead!

I am finding some really sweet gems available that should not be.

Will check exact match social profiles an simiiliar sounding.

One ends in Fi and an existing one ends in FY. May get it anyway has so much potential in another market.

The first, but keep searching or don't rush into it. Some tend to buy up the good ones then porn them off on domain hosting sites, (like honestly who would spent hundreds).

But playing around can usually whittle it down to a name just as good or better.

My last registered domain, (my forum) was also taken, but l put in a hyphen between the words and got what l wanted. And told the scum wanting hundreds to stick it, (so a win, win).

Never pay $400 or more for a domain name there are always alternatives.

Domain names don't have such as huge impact on algorithms when it comes to organic ranking, so you don't need to be too worried here, as any name you choose could be a good and it won't damage your positioning. So, here you primarily need to think about your users and what would be more fitting for them and which search query is more likely for them to make. In my opinion, I would say that between offered solutions, hamsterpad.com is a better one since this is something that people will more often search, it's simple, describes your offer and the content of your site, it's brief and memorizable.

I would go with hamsterpad.com. But don't lose your mind deliberating over this. Both domain names convey the same point. The main part however is the marketing. Get the marketing part right and you will find that either domain name will bring you the results you're looking for.
