turning your aritcles into a youtube video

I know it works
I know it's a great idea

but...
How exactly do you convert an aritcle into a video?
doesn't that just make a really boring video?
With all the cool stuff on youtube, who would watch a 90 second video full of screen shots and dodgy voiceovers?
Am I missing something? I know I am pretty basic when it comes to this

edit: ARGH I MISPELT ARTICLES IN MY TITLE
Well that's not good!

One way would be to get some "stock" photos that have to do with the subject of your article (small pics at Istockphoto are only $1 or $2 each). Then load the images into your video editor, throw in a few cool transitional effects, and finally record the dialog. Voila, ghetto video at it's finest!

Kevin, that's a nice video. Run time just under 5 minutes. But how long did it take you from conception to uploading to get that all together?

      Cheers,

Hmmmm, this video articles thing really rocks.

Thanks for the demo, Kevin, and the inspiration.

And thanks for starting this thread, Rachel.

I really need to work harder at figuring out how to make them on my Mac (ibook, no Windows capabilities). I've got plenty of articles that are just waiting to be turned into other media ;-)

    Hi Rachel,

The best use of video is to add emphasis to the text or spoken voiceover. If your viewers/readers are visual people, the right visual images can really boost their understanding and appreciation of your finely crafted words.

On the other hand, poorly chosen visuals that are slapped together haphazardly can detract from your message.

    Great vid, Kevin.

And THANK YOU for showing us that it's possible to include your own image, your own voice, and integrate with stock photos.

Not to offend anyone who chooses to use this method, but I get so tired of videos that are just photos and flashing copy across the screen for us to read. I'm not sure why so many are created like that. Is it easier? Is it difficult to add voice? Or are people self-conscious about their own voices?

I'm a bit self-conscious about the sound of my own voice, and I think most people are. The main reason why it doesn't make it online very often though is because with four kids, there's never any silence around here. I don't think any marketing video ever made it big with the sound of toddler tantrums and angsty teenage door slamming in the background.

Maybe I'll try it and start a trend. Look out for 'Traffic Secrets Of The... She Ate All My Chocolate Get Out Of My Room I Really HATE It Here!'

I think those are all legitimate reasons...

I think another big reason is the number of people who use PowerPoint to create their presentations, then just record the slide show...

@Kevin: Cool video, how did you get that 'kung fu movie dialog' effect at the end? j/k... :p

@Rachel: Kevin didn't mention it, but he has a great product called "Recipe for Commercials" that will help you a lot with this.

Yes you can do a video just using photos and titles in Windows Movie Maker.

I think it's vital that you focus on creating a video that will get people to click through to your site.

The most obvious way is to split your article into 2 parts.

Part 1 is on YouTube and at the end you tell people to go to part 2 on your site.

You put the URL for part 2 as the FIRST line in your video description.

You can even use a YouTube video for part 2 of your video article.

Just have 2 YouTube accounts and upload part 2 in your second account.

          Why would you do this?

Well apart from a little extra traffic from YouTube if you choose the title of your video on YouTube carefully (matching a long tail keyword phrase) it will often rank very high in Google.

          Kindest regards,
          Andrew Cavanagh

Any time I write an article (which is rare) or have one written for me I turn it into a video.

At first my vids were some of the most boring pieces of crap in existence. Now I focus on really juicy how to information and my results have gotten better.

Just find a way to get the word nudity in there and you'll get
more traffic Like this: There is no nudity or naked women
in this video. That way, searchers for nudity and naked will
find your video. I'm not going to give it all away for free but
maybe you can see how this can be cleverly twisted to your
own evil purposes. (This is where I add the BWAHAHAHAAA in.)

      Hey Rach From New Z'land...

I'll go my usual contrarian route...and offer you'se this suggestion: Combine the two.

Rather then wasting your time trying to create a boring video to compliment a boring article....why not just pinch someone else's interesting, funny yet related to the subject--- YOUTUBE video that has established traffic.....and work it into your acrticle....or web page?

I can take the dullest subject known to man and find a cool video someone else did...to make it interesting.

It's just a matter of searching around a bit.

If your article is (God Forbid) about "why butterfly's fly...et al"..........then you'd be better off from a marketing stand point.....finding a high traffic video.....on YouTube....that somehow relates to butterflys...even if the butterflys in the video are 2 chicks in thong bikinis... swatting flys.

      Capiche?

I finally figured out that no matter how great a video I create....someone out there probably has already created one of equal worth or better. And he did all the work for me. Why not leverage the talents of others? Especially when it's free and easy to do so?

Hell....I'd rather just save the time and hijack the other dude's youtube gimmick. Cuz one of the great advantages of YOUTUBE is knowing exactly which videos people watch...and which ones end up dead and buried. Exploit that!

It's legal....it's youtube......and you can always figure out the number of views upfront...and use those high viewed videos to help get traffic to your boring article on why the frog humped the spotted owl etc.

      Cool huh?

      Rock on.....Zealand Chick....
