SEO for music artist website

I'm going to launch an artist in about 6 months and my main question is: should we purchase the domain name right now to play it safe so nobody gets it first and so when website and music are ready the artist name will show up first on Google? Or, will it hurt the SEO to having a domain and website done but not using yet?
Thanks a bunch.

Until you launch the website, there's nothing for a search engine to rank, so any SEO is irrelevant.

Assuming you're sticking with the artist's name, I'd register the domain right away and start using it any social media accounts and pre-launch activity.

I don't know about this. All the investments in SEO for a website like this seem unreasonable to me. I think that musicians should approach this in terms of sales channels i.e working with music streaming services, social media, youtube, buying ads on websites and groups dedicated to music(genre relevant, of course) and crowd without links on musical forums may help as well.

  • Thanks a lot, guys!
So if I buy the domain name even if I don't use in months it'd be OK, correct? Would you buy the website hosting as well?

Just snap up the domain name. You can leave the hosting until nearer the launch time.

By the way, if the domain isn't the artist's name but a band name, you should check for any similar names that might already exist in the same market before you go full out on promotion. Also check whether any of the main TLDs (.com, .org, .net) are currently being used.

      • Thanks a lot, I really appreciate it. It's an artist name, not a band, and the domain is thankfully available.

  • Thanks! But, just the domain or the hosting as well even if I don't launch the site just yet?

First off, yes buy the domain yesterday - actually the ARTIST should be buying the domain -UNLESS you are like the artists DAD.

Somehow this whole scenario is off... its just not right - or should I say its far from normal.

Musical talent is not just a switch - And here is someone playing music you have never heard before... there is USUALY a trail of sorts... meaning social postings and the like... this person has never gig'd? they have never shared their talent?

I am guessing.. hoping this person is young and you are family... just in the tone of the way YOU are launching this artist.

I would pay attention to how this person has an amountof control over what is going on relative or not - because down the road the whole scenario is going to feel forced and the person is going to feel they have no control, and that in itself is trouble waiting to happen - and I am calling it out 6 months before it even starts.

Get the "Artist" involved.. get them invested... regardless of your relationship.. at somepoint if they are an good, there willcome a time that they will have to still be an artist with or without you..and its probably in your best interest to ensure its without you ( thinking long term )

I think you should start SEO after website launch.
