Considering PR service

Hi,

I have a small SaaS company and considering the value of a service to publish our press releases. Most of the press releases we create are done for the benefit of search engines and to just help raise awareness of our existence - we don't necessarily have big news to release every month, or even every other month.

Years ago it was the only mechanism to get the word out about our products/services. Is it worth it anymore? They want to charge $300 per press release, with an additional $30 for each link. Every ad dollar we spend is critical to us still.

They claim it's distributed to journalists and various syndication networks.

What benefit have you seen from a PR service for your company? Have journalists reached out to you? Have you tracked visits to your website from links in the press releases by other than the search engines?

Have you been able to calculate or associate an increase in your brand identity due to published press releases?

Have you found other avenues to be more effective for brand recognition and search engine awareness/visibility/activity?

No one has any comments or feedback on publishing press releases?

This is a mistake. There are so many ways to promote your services, that are free...that are far more productive.

Start a blog. Write articles every month, and put them on your blog. If your articles are informative, people will link to them naturally, and repost your blog posts. Free and productive. These posts last forever, if it's your own blog.

Create videos of you being interviewed (by an employee) Answer common questions about your service. A few minutes is all that's need. Post them on Youtube. These videos will rank highly on Google. And interested prospects will click on the link to your website. These videos stay on Youtube (and Google) forever.

    Free and profitable.

Publicity? Only if they get your articles on highly respected websites or in magazines. If they are posted on the PR firm website, it's almost worthless.

What if they're not stars? What if they are holes poked in the top of a container so we can breath?

Yes, understood, and we're already doing all of that. Just wanted to see what the perspective was on search engines indexing this content as well, and get some ideas for possible other avenues for promoting what we do and perhaps reaching a different audience.

There's a reason these PR firms exist. I'm not Oracle or Microsoft, but we also have interesting stuff to say.

I nevah read no furthah than this.

If'n you don't gaht no kinda nooz, why do you imagine THE PRESS gonna be in any way intrested?

Most press rooms on most planets trash 99% of submissions on instinct.

That's because they seek trooly transformative stories gonna deepen experience & intel or prompt catalytic change.

An' even then (you may wish to argue), 99% of their output is prolly crap.

We all fallen into the trap of belivein' the RELEASE of CONTENT is like eternal nectah gonna attract speshly hunnycummable bees.

Why, even the exoodin' of actschwl non-nooz may turn heads if'n we run with SpewStory LLC.

Hey, but THAT kinda service costs millions.
