Questions about Buying/Selling Expired Domain

Hi Warriors:

Hope all is well.

Could you please give me as much information about buying and selling expired domains?

When you find a domain that has expired (let us say we went to the made up site Expired Domain For Craig The Airplane Man) and the made up domain Craig Is Here Dot Com is selling for 70.00 US.

Once I go to another made up site How Much Is this Worth To Craig Dot Com and get an approximate value of the expired site

1) When I purchase the expired domain, what information is furnished to me? Is there a certificate of proof of ownership? What else is included?

2) What is the minimum profit you should seek when selling the domain? Obviously if I paid 70.00 it would be foolish to sell for 71.00. What is the general rule please for dollar profit or percentage to seek?

3) How long is a typical auction for the site I am now attempting to resell? Is there an option to have an auction but if Jane/John Doe make a good offer I can stop the auction and accept their bid?

4) What is the normal percentage the typical auction site takes for the sale?

5) Once the sale is made, besides payment/email do I need anything else from the buyer?

6) Once payment is made, what do I need to furnish to the buyer?

7) What types of domains (their niches) are more commonly sought after?

    When you buy expired domain from an auction site, the domain name is transferred to your domain registrar.

    From my experience, no certificate is given.

    Once a domain name is in your account, under your registrar, no one can take it away from you.

    According to Namebio, Voice.com domain name has been sold for a beautiful price of $30,000,000.00 two years ago; so if you buy a domain name at $70.00 do not plan to sell at $71.00; you can target higher sales prices.

    However your potential buyers will not be happy if they pay higher numbers than the instant valuations given by Estibot, Godaddy Valuation, Saw Appraisals, Graen Valuation, or Domainindex. These are instant valuation bots and they are free. But are they credible? As far as your buyers know them, your sales price will necessarily be around these estimated valuations.

      There has to be a formula that people use to determine fair value.

      There is for everything from baseball metrics to approval ratings of politicians.

      In the case of domains it must be based on the term multiple. If a website brings in x for a year revenue it is worth x times that amount.

    That's selling a website...you are asking about selling a domain.


    There is no formula that will guarantee a sales price - a domain is worth what someone is willing to pay for the registration. Gene Pimentel is an expert domainer who used to post on this forum - you might look up his previous posts here - or look him up online.



    Many domain sales sites also offer good info on how to price and what to expect when you are selling domains.

      Since there are sites that determine (we can agree or disagree) the value of the domain name, they are using a formula. You and I may not know it but it is not plucked out of the air.

      I never mentioned guaranteeing a sales price but formulas are there to help appraise based on prior research.

      The first domain registered goes back over 37 years. Anything that old has data/research behind it.

      It could be based on Google Searches/Analytics such as X number of people are searching monthly for term XYZ and the domain is a perfect fit. I am surmising as that was the point of the question I posed.

      One article I read years ago placed some monetary value on the extension as well .com being worth more than others (frequently) as it is almost 4 times to be remembered.

      Good Top-Level Domain
      most people have their hearts set on .COM.

      Short Length
      Short domains are difficult to find, so the shorter it is, the higher your domain worth may be.

      Passes the Radio Test
      Will people know how to spell it after hearing it? Is it easy to remember?

      Correct Spelling
      If you want high figures for your domain, then it needs to be spelled properly. No one is going to have their sights set on sportsdocta.com when sportsdoctor.com is much more appealing. The same can be said about using 4 instead of four, u instead of you or other spelling variations.

      Meaningful Keywords
      In-demand keywords will increase the value of domain names. There has to be a balance here, though; more keywords does not equal more money. People won't want hockeybasketballsoccerdoctor.com as much as sportsdoctor.com.

      Here's how to gauge the interest in your domain's keywords using free tools from Google.

      Google Trends
      Google Trends will help determine whether interest in your keyword is rising or declining, as well as compare how it stacks up against similar keywords.

    A few good books on the subject and a little common sense will help. I would start by learning the basics of domain appraisal and valuation. Here are a few books that are worth reading:
