Microsoft retires IE

After 27 years, Microsoft retires the venerable Internet Explorer.

As you might know, it was once the most popular web browser (IE6 in particular), until Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome surpassed IE.

Microsoft even released a new browser codenamed Project Spartan which would become Microsoft Edge and is the default browser packaged with Windows 10, further mothballing Internet Explorer.

    I fondly remember sitting up all night to download IE5 or maybe 6 (the first real makeover of the browser). I was wowed by the new features and speed. Maybe I was biased because I've always been a Microsoft guy. IE was a big deal back in the day.

    Then it got clunky. so, i went to the dark side.
    Then Edge one came along, and I was actually embarrassed they put that out. .
    Now I use Edge/Chromium and I'm happy again.

        Lol, you don't have to be in your 60s. I just turned 40 and I remember when the choices were IE or Netscape Navigator. I remember I preferred NN but honestly it was probably just because it sounded cooler.

          seriously how young were you when you started? I'm 62 and i remember netscape in my 30's.

          LOL I used to use Netscape Navigator as well back in the day... I remember those days very fondly. Then IE came along -- like a half developed after thought of a project-- and muscled NN out of the way. Thanks to Bill Gate's ruthlessness, we ended up with a third rate search engine imposed upon us... until Firefox and Chrome came on the scene.

    IE 7 was my favorite, despite the security flaws. At my old job as an IT Technician, all the users in the building used IE 6 because some programs weren't compatible with IE 7. But i still used it down in IT Support office on my own computer because it was so great. I think every Microsoft browser after that fell by the wayside.

    I thought it was retired years ago? I still have it on my machine and it pops up sometimes when I look at a SVG because i never changed that from IE. And my virus software go nuts with "This is insecure". Honestly people still use it? I've been on edge for like years

      It was technically retired, but still continued receiving security updates until June 15.

        I still have explorer but only because it is part of the OS, and it tends to just be a safe haven for spam and junk files these days, with some websites looking terrible.

        I remember the hassles l had with developing my software and trying to get it to behave.

        Glad l am not using it for Tax time, (which l need to do now) it wouldn't be easy using that to sort out my liability's, from my assets, (or what we need more off).

        Fresh blood is always an asset.

        And Microsoft using brute force, (or stopping security updates) never boosts a companies credibility!

          To be fair, IE worked better with legacy websites (and some of Microsoft's web apps - Azure and Dynamics CRM, for example).

          But I think it made more business sense for them to just re-code Edge using Chromium instead of the old Chakra engine.

          Microsoft always used brute force for dropping updates (XP and Win 7 in particular).

            Sure, but when l was developing the Underconstruction app, for blogs the Staging was a nightmare, or IE tended to allow large gaps, at the end of the page while Chrome, FF and others were fine.

            Felt like Scroll-jacking in the end, and l had to compromise IE, with most other browsers to get it to market.

        You are an MS guy, right? How can you hate one product but love Office? Or do you see them both as unrelated?

        There are MS products I don't care for, but I give them all a chance if they fit our needs because of our multi-decade close "relationship".

          Yes I used to exclusively used IE but you know, preferences change. When Edge was rolled out IE became archaic.

            I gave up on the later versions of IE and went to Firefox and Chrome. But when Chromium Edge came out, I'm got back on the train. The original Edge was an embarrassment. Half the time I couldn't surf with it. I can't imagine it was all me since most everyone jumped shipped on Edge and went elsewhere. But I'm extremely happy, so far, with the new Edge.

              It was practically unusable. They rushed rolling it out.

              Likewise the new Edge is fast and doesn't eat as much RAM as Google Chrome.
