Is it possible that ebay is dead right now ?

The first 6 months this year I was focussed on sales (while having my ebay store still) but now I put more effort, listed new paintings and can't believe no one is buying.

I am asking myself what else I can do? Where can I found out where to list, online I came across artprice, where I will pay 400EUR per year to list.

Where else I also can list besides etsy ?

Every help is appreaciated.

No, not dead but you may not be selling what people are buying. Are you saying you did WELL the first 6 months? Have you had consistent sales in the past? Have to admit when i think of 'art' I don't think 'ebay' but I could be wrong about that.

Edit: Just went to ebay and looked up 'art' as a category - quite a bit there. I was definitely wrong about that - but don't know how well it sells.

I sell sports cards and other collectibles on eBay, and I can tell you it's anything but dead. How about Etsy? Isn't that the popular marketplace for original crafts and artwork?

How are you presenting your paintings? As individual works of art? As prints? Limited editions?

It's very hard to make an impact like that without an existing fanbase or social media following, but one thing you could do now is to reach out to past buyers and ask for referrals.

Another site to look at apart from Etsy is DeviantArt, but that's also a crowded platform.

If I were you, I'd consider other ways to market your artwork. Depending on the nature of the subject, it might lend itself to a whole variety of presentations. If you check out the many POD (Print-on-Demand) services you'll see artwork being offered on T-shirts and other clothing, mugs, phone cases, beach towels, shower curtains, face masks, stationery items, stickers, jigsaw puzzles, clocks - plus, of course, all kinds of wall art with custom sizing and framing.

It's up to you. Some artists are too precious to see their work turn up on a pit bull's bandana. Others are just happy to make some money.

So to answer the question directly... For Me.. no eBay is not slowing down. BUT it may be slowing down relative to say the past years - and I will explain.

I personally take 2019 as the last bench mark... 2020 was silly crazy and that extended into 2021. For me 2021 was less than 2020 but greater than 2019.

THIS year I did not excede my sales numbers from 2021 in the first half of the year... 2021 in the first half was still a bit crazy... BUT I exceeded the first half of 2019.

So how you are currently doing with eBay sales is relative to when in the past you are comparing.

How to expand what you already have... I am going to go out on a limb and think that maybe you are doing portraits from photographs?

I would ( if possible based on where you live ) have a presence in multiple places.

    #1 Etsy
#2 Facebook Market Place - with a store
#3 Once you have the Facebook Market Place Store set up, you can just short of instantly convert that to a Instagram store as well - which seems to me would be a hot spot for your services ( if my guess is correct )
#4 I would be looking into the "Amazon Makers" program ( again if you qualify based on location ( https://sell.amazon.com/programs/handmade )

If I were you, I would be posting time lapses of you painting to post on A) Instagram, B) Facebook Reels, and C) TikTok

To give a point of reference, my mother-in-law at 65 decided to take up photography and now at 70 makes a good amount of change from Etsy, Facebook, and Instagram

Unless geographically you HAD to... I would not be paying to sell your product- other than the percentages the platforms charge when you sell an item - IE I would not pay $400 just to list your items. there are simply to many FREE options with kick tons of traffic to take advantage of.

An added platform to maybe throw some effort into is Pinterest... it can be pretty effective at throwing traffic towards your offers on say eBay or Etsy or Instagram for that matter - for some reason doesnt work to well with facebook.

I hope that helps, and feel free to ask any questions you might have.

Not sure if it is dead. I check ebay and prices from time to time and every time I can't find any decent stuff which I would like to buy. So I don't see many sellers doing well.

I'm not exactly sure how you can do online marketing for your art, but I suppose you need to hang around forums or instagram if you want to find out more artists and viewers in your field, while you're still working as a full-time artist. It's a big mystery to me, to connect with more people!

Catching whenever someone is interested in your work and being in touch with him/her might be a way. If they agree selling with you might be a good way too. Go ahead sign up price and have a look at what's going on there.
Anyway, right now it seems not many sellers are doing well.

  • Buch Nerd,

No. I think "dead" is too strong a word.
    • And I think eBay's still in the business of serving as a globally competitive buy and sell platform ...

Anyway, the most frequent thing I do in my business is data analytics. But the success of this technique primarily depends on how much of the "good" stuff I have.
    • Otherwise, the error rate of my guesses and projections goes up, unpredictably ...

However, it still helps. A lot.
    And that's primarily because:

    • Where I succeeded points me to the process of understanding why, and planning then visualizing how, the likelihood of similar success could potentially be repeated, , scaled and expanded; and

    • Meanwhile, where I failed directs me to understanding why, and to developing how, a set of techniques could possibly optimize the process described earlier, and potentially avoid similar issues in the future ...

So at the end of each point, I just have my plan to build. And my process to tweak.

Amazon and face book market place .You might also want to start a blog or YouTube channel to get some extra traffic .

Build your list and drive traffic .Sounds like you are relying solely on ebay for traffic and sales.

In the event Ebay was to fold your business would too .

Ebay isn't dead at all. Plenty going on in the art space. Maybe your offering has changed and people aren't buying. One good way of diversifying as an artist, is to also sell prints of your paintings. That way if a popular painting sells, then you can still sell the prints in the future. Another good one to list your art on is Saatchiart as they have a huge lot of art focused traffic and setting up your listings is relatively easy.

I don't think so, eBay rebuilding their common mistakes for better services, but for hurrying up, could be Amazon as well

eBay is still alive and well, but there could be better venues for your paintings. Have you considered local events? Have you tried local auctions? Or an upscale consignment shop or boutique? Those might be good places to try out and see if there is good demand for your paintings there. Just my two cents.

Definitely not dead. One of my friend is making more than £10000 per month from Ebay by selling fishing accessories.

I have long wanted to create a store on the Internet for the sale of all sorts of toys, I have long been studying this issue, I think to order toys on Ebay or aliexpress, but I am at a loss when creating a site, but do not know who to turn to, very often came across syndicode.com, heard about them only in a positive way

If you plan on selling toys with your own site just order toys off these companies and make sure you mark it up to make a profit. However, if you plan on opening an eBay store do not buy new toys off those sites. You will be competing with Ali Express sellers, selling the same thing you want to sell at a cheaper rate.

I don't knows about that but I personally don't or wouldn't buy much from ebay. Not sure if that's just a personal thing or a general trend.

Interestingly enough, people seem to have one they favor as in Amazon, Walmart, eBay etc and seem to stick to it. The platforms obviously remarket well to their customer base for retention.
