Does managed hosting generally make a WordPress site secure?

If I invest in managed hosting, will this generally make my WordPress site extremely secure? Do some managed hosting companies do a better job than others? Any recommendations?

Generally no. It is just a marketing catch and cost more to get managed WP hosting. It doesn't matter much about the security. Just be sure to pick reliable provider and tight up the security by yourself. Wordfence, BackUP plugin and get free CloudFlare account. This is more than enough.

Not really. Security depends on the vulnerabilities in the used version of code and in the infrastructure. Many layers of software build up the final security level.

If you handle the WP version then always keep it up to date. Also aside from security, stability is also an important factor, so always try and use long time supported versions of software.

If you want to secure your wordpress site, using a managed webhost apparently is a big part of that.

I did a simple search for you to find out and here's what I discovered.
First. I personally use Webhostingpad and have for years great company and quick response times
    They offer a wordpress option.
    https://www.webhostingpad.com/wordpress/

Second I came across some steps you can take, put out by WP Buffs.

    I hope that helps.

Managed WordPress hosting can help with this, but it's important to know that it's not a complete solution to all your problems. You can read about this in detail from this post -- hostkoala vs buyshared. Check out the pricing and support section. There you will find some good points.
Managed WordPress hosting can help with this, but it's important to know that it's not a complete solution to all your problems.
For example, most packages offered today will be manageable to some degree.
In other words, by managing their server for you, the hosts are killing two birds with one stone: saving you from themselves and escaping hordes of support tickets.

Managed WordPress hosting can be a great option especially if you aren't very technical.

The main benefit of managed WordPress hosting is that it lets you focus on growing your business instead of dealing with technical details. Instead of doing everything yourself, the host will help you speed up your site, secure it from malicious actors, maintain it, and so on. So again, if you aren't very technical they will be able to secure your site properly.

Managed hosting is worth the extra money for serious websites because it gives your site a strong foundation to let you focus on growth and marketing instead of technical details. However, for hobby sites or less serious projects, you would be better off saving money with shared hosting.

The main drawback of managed WordPress hosting is price, its definitely more expensive. But it would be a good investment if you can't/ don't want to do everything yourself.

A few great options for managed Wordpress hosting are Kinsta, WP Engine, and Flywheel.

    Hope that helps

I think it does not play that much role in providing extreme security to your WP hosting. It also depends, that you should be updated enough to keep up to date with your server hosting. Managed to host just release the weight on your shoulders to manage the server. So, in my opinion, it does not much that much if you have managed services for hosting or unmanaged.

Never activate so-called "nulled" plugins and themes that you downloaded from warez sites.
