Here's my story of a "small win" that might inspire you

I've been posting on this forum for a while now, asking a bunch of questions, etc. Some of you already know my story...

In short, I've been self-employed for over 10 years now. I've been a full-time IM'er (internet marketing as my main source of income) since 2020.

I've always had this one huge mental barrier though, and that was PAID TRAFFIC!

For the entire life of my business, I just used YouTube, Reddit and free Facebook groups to get traffic to sell my course. I always looked at paid traffic as this extremely complicated, highly risky endeavor that only an elite few people only truly understand.

I've dabbled in Facebook ads a few times before. The backend of Facebook business manager always gave me anxiety, but I managed to plow through and actually "give ads a try". However, aside from setting up my pixel, I had no clue what I was doing. I didn't know what a "funnel" was. I didn't know what "conversion events" were.

I'd always quit within a few weeks of running these ads because I didn't feel like my $5/day budget was being well spent. Why would I want to spend $150/month on ads that "may or may not work"??

My mindset towards ads was that they required a "professional marketer" to run them. Professional marketers cost money, but if I wanted to run ads that's what I needed to do.

Then I found HER...

She charged me $2500 for month 1, and it was going to be $2000 for each additional month. Month 1 was just the "onboarding month". The ads would actually be up and running in months 2 and on...

Her plan was to start with a monthly budget of $1500. So on top of the $2000 that she would be charging me, I'd also be spending an additional $1500 each month.

That's the cost of advertising though right??

Three weeks into month 1, I realized that I knew more about marketing that this person who I had already paid $2500. So I told her that I wouldn't be moving forward.

When I compared the price of running ads myself to paying someone to run ads for me, it became very clear that doing it myself was really the most cost-efficient way.

But I didn't know how...

So I did some research, and I found a really sweet course at a really affordable price. I'm not promoting anything here, so I'm not going to mention the course name. There are a bazillion different "how to run FB ads" courses out there though, so just find one...buy it...then take action on it.

That's what I did.

My mindset has now changed from:

"$150/month is a waste of money"

To

"I plan on spending $1500/month minimum because that's the cost of doing business".

Also by meticulously following what this course tells me to do, I know what specific "data" that I am looking for.

I'm only a few weeks in, but I'm actually really enjoying it now. It's actually FUN, because I actually feel like I know what I'm doing.

I have "engagement campaigns" and "conversion campaigns" running, and both are on point for the target KPIs that the course tells me to look for.

I do use my own click tracking software, because I don't want to rely on FB 100%. According to this software, I have made 6 sales as a direct result of clicking on my ad. The total amount earned was $674. The ad spend on this ad was $102.30. Thats a 6:1 ROI!

Now, I did lose a few hundred when I was still figuring things out. I made some dumb mistakes, but overall I've spend around $700 in my own personal "learning phase".

Now that I have things dialed in, and I understand this stuff, it's actually pretty easy.

So now I feel like I'm starting to actually take control over my income as opposed to just sitting around waiting for sales to happen from my organic traffic.

I just wanted to share that story. Maybe it will inspire some people who may be in the same place I was when it came to paid ads!

    Congrats!

And this may sound like I'm splitting hairs but I'm not, this distinction will come in handy later:

    Your ROI was not 6:1.

To get the ROI, deduct your wages (or the amount you'd have to spend to hire someone to do the same work) from the amount then calculate your ROI.

You are ahead, no matter what you call ROI.

But your investment was not only dollars, it was your time too.

You'd have to have more sales to do it properly.

It will come in handy if you hire someone in the future (which, despite how you feel right now), might be a good idea.

Then, if you do it properly, you'll be able to tell if someone you hire is worth it or not (you'll be able to tell if they bring you more per money spent then you can produce; if they can, they're worth hiring; if not, they're costing you money so, no).

  • A win is a win in my book. Congrats on the results from your paid advertising campaign. And a 6:1 ROI is phenomenal. Some would kill for a 2:1.

Thanks man! We'll see how this keeps up over a larger sample size. Right now things are doing well at a low budget. If I can successfully scale this one ad up that will be awesome!

    Wow.

You give me faith that one day I can be just as successful as you with FB ads. Right now I'm in the middle of a couple of engagement campaigns, but after that it's traffic, then straight conversion.

Throughout paying for the data, I'm learning which age group I should be advertising to. So, it's a sort and sift for me right now.

But the good thing is I'm starting to learn which countries give cheaper clicks. Also, during my engagement campaign today, someone actually signed up to my list! That hadn't happened before... very surprising.

I'm going to keep at it like you and hopefully get some better results over time. Who knows, when properly optimized, FB ads could be better than solo ads (which I've yet to try)...

Look into Laurel Portie. She is the one who I am learning a ton from currently. She has a $7/month ads course which is amazing!!

I still have a lot to learn, but I know a lot more than I did a month ago I'll tell you that!!

I'll look into her as well. Currently I'm rereading and using knowledge from a book Edmund Loh wrote. He teaches the idea of warming up the Facebook page and stuff doing different ad ideas before going for the big one, conversion.

So that's what I'm working on. Oh, if you want to check it out, the name of it is "Get More Customers". Not to sound promotional or anything. But it's a jam packed ebook I'll tell you that. I definitely fell asleep trying to read through it multiple times LOL.

I really like the name of that title, because that's exactly what I'm trying to do. I'm definitely going to check it out. Thank you!

I got banned just for creating a new fan page!

I was able to run engagement ads for page follows on a couple of my other pages which helps me get social proof and gain trust when I repost my youtube health personal experience info training on them, but man FB IS tough. So congrats!

What does Laurel say about getting banned or slapped?

I forgot a few of my engagement ads did get slapped and shut down. Ironically they were exactly the same as ones that previously got approved for a different FB page and ran fine! LOL

One thing I've learned in my short time running Fb ads is if your previous ad ran fine... and resubmitting it doesn't work, you can try to appeal it. I appealed mine and they that day, if not the next day, it was approved.

Then again, Fb be changing their rules sometimes so... it's iffy. But I'd suggest appealing it if you want to. That's only if they ran.

Good to know if I decide to run engagement ads again.

At the time I just tried a different image with same text. It wasn't approved, so I tried different images until I got approved.

          Go figure. lol

So did you recalculate your ROI by deducting yours or an assistants wage from the profit? Would be so cool if you could let us know but if not now worries.

I just calculate ROI based on how much I made - how much I spent. Straight to the point!

I work solo, so I don't have any wages to pay out
