Best for you or best for me?

I don't use wysiwyg gizmos... so for me the best is PSPad.

I've always stuck with Dreamweaver but that's just a personal preference, it might be much more than you need.

I haven't used nvu but I imagine it will do everything you need and looks like a good alternative to Dreamweaver.

I use Dreamweaver and have been for years! With all editors they have a learning curve. Knowing where the tools are on the interface, functions, etc. If you are looking for a low cost or no cost solution i have recommend Kompzer to my coaching students and it works pretty well for them.

Here is generally how I work.

For basic HTML changes I use TestEdit (Notepad on PC)

If I needed something visual then I used NVU or Komposer which are very similar however I just started using Dreamweaver and am finding it very useful.

For CSS I always use Web Developer for firefox. I load the html page in firefox and then use the Edit CSS option to live edit the css.

Also I sometimes use photosop and it's slices to create simple splash screens.

That'd be Dreamweaver, then. Industry standard.

If you have knowledge of html, ConText is pretty good (and free!).

BTW, html is the basis of everything on the web. I feel privileged
because I took the time to learn it (thank you Elizabeth Castro!)

Everything gets so much easier (including wordpress) when you
        know html/css.

Pretty easy as well, but don't expect it to happen in one night!

note pad for easy changes and then Dreamweaver for whole creation. It's a plus to know CSS and HTML for Dreamweaver but you'll get the hang of it faily quickly.

My vote is for Dreamweaver also.

I am no techie and the 2-foot thick Dreamweaver manuals that I saw at Borders intimidated the heck out of me a year ago but I went for it anyway and it really wasn't that tough to learn. I think I only watched a few free online tutorials and then just learned the rest by using it.

Thanks for the links to Trellian and ConText. I have not heard of them. I would steer people away from Kompozer. It works OK, most of the time. It does have bugs, though, and crash a fair amount of time.
