Last time I was managing corporate Google Adwords campaign it was 9 times less likely that people would buy anything by clicking on Adwords vs. clicking on organic listings.
    People just don't trust advertisements.
I think this ratio took nosedive even further and that got reflected in less advertising dollar revenue for Google.
To save situation Google has to police quality of landing pages for Adwords - so i see this as a logical evolution.

People might not trust ALL advertisements is probably what you meant.

...but they sure are accepting them more nowadays.

There's a good reason why banner advertising is starting to come back into play. It's long been dead, but in the recent 3-4 years you see more and more high profile advertisers use banner advertising.

Ads still work and always will.

If someone is looking for something and you present them with a solution, they will be interested. It's as easy as that.

As for scammy, crappy advertisers...they just spoiled everything for legitimate advertisers. Man oh man it will be a nightmare for legit biz owners to advertise effectively.

I think banner ads works best for brand awareness campaigns en masse. That's where high profile spenders benefit the most. "Buy ...you_search_keyword... on ebay" - type of ads.

When people look for solution to specific problem or buy specific product - adwords are least effective and not only for me. Google is pretty good at organically ranking pages that are most relevant to your search anyways, so why people should trust some lousy advertiser who pays to jump in front of your eyes?
That what I observed and proved to be the case operating $20k/mo adwords campaigns.
