DL Guard acting weird with external URLs?

This may be completely my fault, so I wanted to check with others before I but Sam for support (he's busy I know!).

I just found out that my DLGuard download pages are not working when the source file is external to the domain DLGuard is installed on. This was never a problem until recently.

I upgraded to v4.5 recently, but not THAT recently, and I am sure I'd have had more support requests if it was related to this. My host is BlueHost if that matters.

Anyone else getting a problem where files not hosted on the same domain as DLGuard get treated as wrong URLs? The error message says that the URL is invalid. I know for sure it IS valid (can copy/paste from DLGuard product screen and it is valid).

Let Sam know at the forum or via his support area. You'll get faster (and better) support and potentially alert him to a bug.

I will email him. I simply didn't want to *assume* that it was a bug. DLGuard has been amazing, and usually it's ME doing something wrong, but this was something that just popped up with no changes to my setup, so it could be BlueHost, it could be DLGuard, or something else.

Either way, Sam's the man. He *always* helps and I just didn't wanna bug him too early if this was something someone else had seen and knew a solution to.

    Hi Chris,

This can be a number of issues, such as your hosting provider shutting down the ability to open remote files (some hosts do this - luckily the far majority don't).

Also, did you recently change your Config to use the "Large File Support"? If so, this method only works for locally hosted files. You can use the standard or alternate download method instead, for remotely hosted files.

But I'll check out your ticket and we'll discuss it there!

    cheers

Sam ... aha! Yes I recently switched to "large file support" so you've solved the mystery!

That answers the question 100%. Thanks!

This next question is probably NOT related to DLG but I'll ask anyone listening anyway. Lately, a MUCH LARGER percentage of my customers are emailing to tell me that the zip file they download is corrupt or invalid.

Often I get them to use 7-zip and it works, but not always. Usually the problem is Vista users, but sometimes XP. Strange as heck. Anyway, I haven't done anything to the source files.

Sam do you have any ideas? So many of your customers deal with zip files, so I'm sure you've probably heard of something before.

Make sure your files inside the zip don't have any spaces in the filenames. Use underscores whenever possible. That may help.

Ian it works perfectly with PayPal. No issues at all. Check the instructions that Sam gives in the help section thoroughly. You might just be missing some simple step.

    Hi Chris,

Are the ZIP files pretty big? And is it more common with remotely hosted files?

If so, I'd recommend moving the remotely hosted files onto the same website as DLGuard, and then enable Large File Support again.

You can also tick the "Set Server Timeout To Zero" option, as well, and give it a test to make sure it's all working.

This will give a more solid download experience, especially for larger files. The benefit of having the files on the same website as DLGuard is that it allows DLGuard to detect the file's correct size, and then set the size in the download headers, which helps with download connections through your browser.

Let me know how you go!

    cheers

    Hi Ian,

The Paypal integration should be pretty straight forward - you just create a product in DLGuard, enter your Paypal email address (try unticking the "This is my primary Paypal email" box, if it's ticked), and then use the sales link DLGuard gives you to test the process.

Pretty much everything else is automated for you.

If you're still having troubles, if you can open a support ticket: DLGuard Customer Support

...and send me your DLGuard login URL and details, as well as the product name you're having trouble with, I'm happy to check it out for you!

    cheers

    Hi Sam,

The primary product I sell is on the same site that DLG is installed on and the zip files are locally hosted on that domain. The main file is 143 megs.

I changed the default email to include instructions on using 7-zip in case people get the "corrupt or invalid file" message. That has dramatically cut down on support emails, but it's still a bit strange to me, a mystery, as to why the problem became so common over the last month. I was having this error message with about 60% of sales.

    Chris,

I'd be interested in knowing, as well.
It might be useful to ask your clients what platform (Windows? Mac? Which version? Vista Home Basic? Windows 7?) and what software tool they are using to unzip the files.
I believe some zipping utilities may not be compatible with the Windows default zip utility...that's my guess (that I think I may have even heard before...)

    Hi Chris,

    Who is your hosting provider?

And do you think the cut down on issues was directly linked to your recommendation to use 7zip?

Have you noticed a partciular affiliate doing some extra promotions, or an increase in referals from certain websites?

Sometimes you can get an influx of issues simply because of the experience level of your buyers.

For example, if someone who markets mostly to newbies sends out a big promotion, suddenly you'll have an influx of "newbie type" questions.

Have you noticed anything like that recently?

I've only ever had 1 issue with a ZIP file, and that was from someone who was using an anti-virus program (don't remember the name, sorry) that had a bizzare default setting that renames zip files when they're downloaded so that you can't open them.

Also, what are you using to ZIP up the file? Maybe try just using the Windows "zip" feature to create the zip in the first place?

    Hope some of this helps

    cheers
