Do You Drink While You Work?

Ha, interesting question. I don't actively drink while I work, as I find it makes it harder to be as objective and efficient, but I've done work before after an evening of "a few" and I usually check it in the morning

Yeah, since we can do this stuff from home, technically we can be drinking. It doesn't work for me but i'd be curious to hear other thoughts?

Count me in as a definite "NO", I actually quit alcohol almost 3 years ago and haven't had a drop since. I can't imagine getting any work done while under the influence - I'm primarily a software application developer and I can't see how logic and booze could possibly be a good mix!

I do have a Warrior Forum addiction, but I'm not making plans to put a stop to that any time soon!

Contrary to most, I'm actually quite productive while I drink. I think it depends on the mentality you set about, I can set about and putz around for hours sober or get a ton done while drinking, I feel like it's more of the mood you're in. I also will block internet for a set period of time so I won't stray while I write or design though!

I have a rule that I don't drink through the week. This can be broken if there is a function, and then it's only one or two as I will drive most times.

I have been to work with hang overs, I ahve even thrown up at work.

I think that in any job you need a clear head and alcohol doesn't allow you to do that.

Mind you there are days when I wonder why I'm not drinking

My teapot is never far from me. My wife keep telling me that I don't drink enough water so I try to drink more of it. But I always soak a tea bag in it so it tastes good. I heard that fish crap in water, so I boil it first, then dunk a tea bag in it for a while before I drink it.

So yes, I am always drinking while I "work".

I don't know that it's really the "600 pound gorilla", because I don't think it's one of those "dirty little secrets" or evena major problem. That being said...

I drink coffee, juice fortified with stanols/sterols, water, and every now and then a soda. I gave up the sauce a little over 19 years ago, however, I do agree it's up to each person, and don't think it makes a difference.

Besides, we've all seen some real j-u-n-k and as hard as it may be to fathom, some of it was written by people who were stone cold sober. For them, their drug of choice appears to be stupidity, greed or apathy.

I don't drink much anymore, but when I used to write music I always seemed to produce better results when buzzed.. maybe I'll give that a go with writing. haha.

Depending on the time of day the only things I drink when I'm working are coffee, water, or protein shakes haha

I save my adult beverage consumption for the weekends when I go out with my friends.

I think everyone is affected a bit differently by alcohol, and should make a careful decision before deciding to throw back a few cocktails while putting together an SEO plan haha

Yep, I drink sometimes while I work. And yes, sometimes it does affect the quality, but not often. Now, it also depends what KIND of work I'm doing. When I write sales copy I never drink. When I do intensive market research, the only thing I drink is green tea and/or coffee. Otherwise it's marini's, a red wine, or tequila shots.......

Haha, every once in a great I'll kick back with a couple beers while I work. Takes the edge off of the boring tasks, and gets my mind flowing. However, there's a fine line between a nice buzz while working, and flat-out being drunk.

I never drink while I work. I do however drink when I am not working on the comp, which is a whole different story haha.

I hope this doesn't come across as preachy, because that's far from my intent. A little background: I've spent most of my adult life as a working musician, the singer/songwriter variety. I've seen many promising careers end far too soon because of some sort of chemical abuse. Drinking while working is a slippery slope. Almost everyone that tries doing this near the beginning of their career sees a little success, because alcohol lowers your inhibitions, and when you are writing or performing under the influence you'll sometimes tap into something that you haven't yet learned to easily access. This is normal, and misleading. Keep doing it and whatever skills that you have built as a writer begin to erode. You'll start to think that maybe all you need to recapture that feeling is to add an extra dose of whatever it is that first got you into that creative space, but instead of boosting your creativity you're actually shutting it down.

I won't name any names, but for every famous musician or writer that managed to consistently put out great work throughout their entire careers while abusing booze or drugs, there have been countless others that flamed out long before they should have. Ever discover a great musician early on, buy all their albums, and then wonder what the hell happened to them years later when they started releasing crap? Most of them got hooked on something, and lost their edge.

I don't really drink alcohol.

But I drink tea like it's going out of style. I usually always have a glass right next to my computer. I go through almost a gallon a day.

I seldom do, I suppose I have to be in the right frame of mind to be drinking while working. I think a lot also depends on the type of task you're doing - if you're doing something that requires a lot of intense concentration and focus like graphics work, you may end up being very inefficient while doing it drunk...lol!

On the other hand, I think for me that when I'm doing some relatively light (as opposed to intensive analytical) writing, the words 'flow' out more easily with less censoring when I've had a few to drink. I become less critical about every word and sentence used, and as a result I think I can probably get more done this way! I know this is weird, but when I write sometimes I view everything too critically and being a little woozy and drunk helps to get the words out faster!

I tend to get less work done. I'm easily distracted when I'm drinking, so I reserve it for times that I don't have to be very productive. But I can also be more creative when I'm drinking, so when I have those 20-article orders for about the same thing, and I'm out of ideas... I break out the rum.

I'm much better at higher math - graph theory and matrix algebra, in particular - when I've been drinking. So if I'm writing anything that deals heavily with those subjects, I tend to have a few drinks before I get started. Sometimes I can't even understand the theory behind what I've done the next morning, but the work checks out.

I work from home doing this stuff, and I could drink all day if I wanted to. If I wanted to be a drunken idiot and not make a dime.
When I am not working a few might spawn some creativity, a few more and I am basically worthless for idea generation or productivity.

I have perhaps 3 or 4 beers a week if any and only when chilling out.

I just have a swig from my bottle of voddy on a morning to wake me up. Just kidding. If I'm doing any work on an evenning and I've had a stressful day AND I'm just working on my own stuff (which is 99% of the time) then I sometimes have a couple of bottles of Bud... Carling or a fish bowl glass of red wine.

I don't think it scuppers my works but it does chill me out and make the evenning more enjoyable. Now where did I put that bottle of voddy?!

Each to their own but I actually believe its all about state of mind when working from home. Some days I am so unproductive and maybe if I had a drink it would help me relax and set my creative juices flowing, who knows?

For me though the choice of drink has to be coffee, it fires up my engine in the morning and keeps me going when I hit a slump in the afternoon, I don't think I could actually work without it now!

I'll sip a little wine when I work late. I have a low tolerance for alcohol so even with just half a glass I get a lot less done, but it's worth it.

Only when I am working on my own projects, never during a JV project or work for a client.

I post on a niche related forum as a part of my work. It's all women and we often set a night and a time and we have cyber cocktails together. So I have a ball with these women all over the world and building my contacts at the same time. Had some great laughs drinking with the forum ladies.

I don't drink while working but I do have a morphine IV drip running 24/7...

If you want some perspecive about drinking and working read Stephen King's autobiographical writing guide titled On Writing. He claims to have written several books that he has no recollection of even writing... WOWZA!
