What REALLY is internet marketing?

There seems to be four different "crowds" of internet marketers:

1. Information marketing/direct-response marketing. Those who focus on things like "salesletter" and "lead-generation" and "marketing funnel". So people like Mike Filsaime, Willie Crawford, Eben Pagen, Gary Ambrose, Joel Comm, Derek Gehl. This seems to be the one most of us here in the warriorforum call "internet marketing"

2. Ecommerce. Like Brad Fallon/Andy Jenkins sites, Amazon etc.

3. Blogosphere/social media. So people like Shoemoney, John Chow, Mashable, Techcrunch, Darren Rowe, and to some extend John Reese (although you can class him in the first group as well)

4. Technology startups. Google, Yahoo, Digg, Facebook, Youtube, Twitter.

Is it just me being weird today or does everybody feel this way? Which one do you define as internet marketing?

    Tough question

That's why the term "internet marketing" is meaningless.

All those categories I guess are considered to be "Internet marketing"..whatever the hell that is lol.

The only thing that confuses people is the sub niche (make money niche" which is kind of exclusively know as "internet marketing"

Ok I'll stop rambling on....I'm kind of confused too lol..

I like to call myself an "internet business man"

It's not fancy, but it works

I think it is just doing business using the internet as a medium.

      My definition.

p.s. Marketing on the internet like was said above is pretty much the top and bottom of it... nothin crazy...
Both of you remind me of the interview I conducted with Mark Joyner...

Yup... especially here in the warrior forum, when we say "internet marketing" the first thing they think of is ebooks, salesletters, list building, squeeze page and mike filsaime. And to the outside world, the first thing they think of is scam, get-rich-quick schemes, spamming, ebook salesmen etc

Very few actually can relate internet marketing to google or youtube. Which is why I asked this question. I guess it means different things to different people.

I define "Internet Marketing" as "Marketing" on the "Internet". Simple.

Which encompasses all of the above "groups" into the same 'main' category; and your grouping is actually 'sub-categorizing' the main category.

    Isn't it?

Any marketing done through the internet obviously qualifies to be referred to as Internet Marketing. This ranges from ecommerce, surveys, blogging, e-newsletters and ezine promotion to technology startups, etc.

Indeed, the list is extensive as virtually all transactions covering all spheres of human endeavors can be carried out through the internet services.

What one should do is locate the area that fits his/her market strategy, and try to know all he/she can about it. That will guarantee success.
