Is this worth pursuing any further?

I spent many hours developing this, but as usual, I get cold feet taking it any further!

Basically it is creating PDF with an added navigation system and far greater usability. The added navigation system is included on every page except the cover. I believe it is especially useful in full screen mode

I've added links to an example in my signature file. Could I please have your views as whether you think anybody would want to develop their PDFs developed this way?

I think there are a lot of ways to expand the pdf viewing experience and make it more enjoyable or easier.

        Id keep going

Sounds like you need to take a bit of the advice you offered in your e-book.

Seriously, I like what you've done with it, and was surprised by your confession at the end.

Good work! Now, start believing in you!

Some of your navigation features don't work if Javascript is turned off (which I leave off in Acrobat for better security).

                Good idea overall though.

I do my eBooks with a complete navigation system. Not page by page as you've done, though. But, aren't some of your navigation features already built-in to Acrobat? By that, I mean I can go from page to page and jump to different pages just with the toolbar Acrobat has.

Dan's content is irregularly read by handfuls of people. Join the elite few by reading his blog: dcrBlogs.com, following him on Twitter: dcrTweets.com or reading his fiction: dcrWrites.com but NOT by Clicking Here!

Dan also writes content for hire, but you can't afford him anyway.

                  Hi Dan

Yes some of them are. The idea behind it all was just to make using PDFs alot easier and intuitive to use. People may or may not find them useful, but they are there to use if they want to and can. They don't really distract the user if they don't want to use them. In full screen mode your navigation options tend to be very limited.

I take your point about Javascript though.

P.S. for people who prefer to print out the ebooks, the navigation bits don't print

There is a new thing in corporate e-books, like Betty Crocker recipes, for example. They are done in exe format and they are laid out like a real book, side to side and you can flip the page with your mouse.

I know a lot of people are wary of exe files, less when Betty Crocker is offering it, but is that a way e-books might be headed?

      Hi Mark

      You could be right!

I do think people are used to using pdfs for reports etc. PDFs are sent via email and can be used on many platforms. I would say that epub files are probably the way to go for the likes of novels (something else I've been looking into)

This is actually an *old* thing. Circa late '90s.

Ebooks morphed FROM exes to pdfs, I doubt their going back the other way.

I can understand your hesitation in proceeding further.

It's called Fear of Failure, and I also suffer from it on a regular basis.

The logic is simple: if you never finish a project, then it never has a chance to fail. So, by default, you never run the risk of disappointment, since the project never fails.

Getting over it is easier said than done.

I still have a hard time with it on occasion, but I'm A LOT better than I used to be. Just keep it in your mind that failing is good thing. It goes against almost EVERYTHING we were taught in school (and sometimes at home, too).

Do some research on the philosophy of failure until you are very confident that failure is necessary for success, and the road to success is PAVED with one failure after the next. Any truly successful person can tell you that. Know that every failure gets you one step closer to success.

    Best of luck.

Overall, I think what you've done is great and hope you'll see it through to the end!

The only feature that wasn't totally intuitive to me was your "View" feature. When I clicked it, it jumped between page 5 and page 53 so I am guessing you have coded it to go to the TOC (it goes to the last page of the TOC) and to the end of the ebook but the word "View" really doesn't clearly convey what is supposed to happen.

    At least, that's my take.

      Hi Kevin

The view option is set to go back to the last page you viewed. It is one of those options that can be accessed through the toolbar and which Adobe refers to as view. I have tried to think of something else but haven't come up with anything. Referring to something like back & forward could refer to previous and next page.

I would very much welcome any ideas

To be honest, I'm not really sure where to go with it. I believe it could be a good service, but who would pay for it? I originally started the process for work (usability & accessibility field) but they didn't seem to go for it in a big way

I have not even looked at the PDF yet but you must have faith in yourself and trust your own work otherwise your customers will be able to tell. It sounds like you have a great product so go all the way. It is really the only way to see if you have what it takes.

Have faith in yourself. This is a cool product.
If you don't give it a go you'll always be left wondering, what if?
If it doesn't work so what??!! But it will work.

You could offer this as a service but I think you might do better to (if possible) sell it in a WSO as a download.
There are plenty of people here who use PLR that would want to make their products look better.
If you write a sales letter and want someone to look over it I will be happy to help.
I have a couple of tips that might help.

    Regards

    Anthony

I strongly believe that you are going the right direction. Do not just stop there but instead go and complete it. Between success and failure depend on you.

I'm using "preview" on a Mac, and it just didn't work for me. The previous/next buttons worked, but clicking on the other things didn't do anything useful for me. It was not intuitive as to what I was supposed to be doing/seeing/experiencing.

I see you're trying something new/different, and that's good, but you may need to do some more testing across platforms. PDF as a basic format has a reputation as being very cross-platform and "just working". Introducing extra widgets that cause confusion and clutter may be problematic.

Cheers, I'll look into this. I knew some older readers didn't have the capability to use all the buttons but I didn't realise that it didn't work on a MAC. Do you have javascript enabled?

      Thanks Grandstar, quite an accolade!

As to your question about cost. I haven't really put too much thought into this yet. Obviously it will depend on the time taken. The majority of time is taken up creating bookmarks. Once the bookmarks are created and any adjustments are made to the button graphics at the bottom, it doesn't take long to complete the process.

Did you have anything in mind?

Just took a look at it, I love the concept. This would be particularly helpful with a bigger PDF document, I tend to get "lost" in them scrolling around here and there, and those helpful navigation icons/widgets at the bottom of each page would really help.

You really need to proceed with this! I'm fairly convinced that there are many people out there who would love to have this incorporated in their ebooks. Since you say you've already put many hours of effort into this, don't you dare abandon it now!
