How important are Google Reviews for Local SEO?

What are your thoughts on the importance of Google reviews for a business's ranking in the map pack and local search results?

The local search industry surveys seem to imply that reviews are either the third most important factor in map pack ranking or the least important factor in local organic search.

I don't know about you, but I believe Google reviews play a much more important role.

Have you ever seen a local business dominate local search in a competitive niche such as "web design company" without having at least 10+ reviews.

Anyone else? Or is it just me?

Your final question is not the same as the question you pose in the subject line.

Positive reviews are absolute gold. There is nothing like a customer testimonial to convince others to buy your product.

That said, whether or not it has any direct effect on SEO is conjecture.

Either way, whether or not it helps with SEO, it definitely helps with conversions.

    I don't know a lot about SEO...

but I know I read reviews all the time.

Whether or not it helps SEO is one thing...whether or not the reviews help to get more customers, I'd say absolutely yes.

  • You're right on the money. Google reviews are critical for local business ranking, even if some surveys might place them lower. Here's why:

Trust and Credibility: Google prioritizes businesses that potential customers can trust. Positive reviews act as social proof, demonstrating your reliability and quality of service.
Local SEO Signal: Reviews are a strong local SEO signal. They tell Google your business is active, engaged with customers, and relevant to local searches.
Keyword Optimization: Reviews often contain keywords people use to search for local businesses. This helps Google understand your services and match your listing with relevant searches.
While the exact ranking factor weight might fluctuate, it's undeniable that reviews play a major role. It's highly unlikely for a local business, especially in a competitive niche like web design, to dominate searches without strong reviews (10+ is a good benchmark).

Real reviews are the greatest. They go a long way. It is known as 'social proof' in marketing terminology. As a real value add to a listing, I think it will naturally help your search ranking.

I can tell you from years of experience in local SEO that reviews are super important for rankings.

They not only increase rankings but also give potential customers more confidence to pick up the phone and call. Once the profile is fully completed and citations done, reviews is the one thing to continually be working on.

Apparently the text in reviews is not a ranking factor (not sure about this) but responding to reviews it also important.

Thanks all, i totally agree with your comments. It just amazed me why the local SEO survey deemed them of such low importance! When clearly they are one of the most critical.

Play a crucial role in local SEO, especially for ranking in the map pack. They act as trust signals, boost click-through rates, and provide user-generated content that enhances keyword relevance. Also customer engagement and conversions, all of which are interrelated. Overall, they are far more important than many realize, particularly for businesses looking to dominate local search.

Most people check that so it's really important, i have seen many people buy those reviews but you can guess if the reviews are bought or not for any local listing.

I have recently been helping my Son find a job through recruitment agencies. I have found the best place to look for them is in the google maps section where they appear as they have a business listing and reviews. This has really helped in not only finding the agencies but making a list of the best ones to contact, by order of the reviews. I think for a local business, a listing and the reviews are critical.

I can't say I have seen that. But this is a case where correlation doesn't mean causation. A niche is competitive because it gets lots of traffic. And a company that ranks high for a competitive niche will see lots of traffic and thus lots of reviews.

As others have mentioned, whether or not reviews are important for Google, they're definitely important for regular users. Having a good number of positive reviews is bound to increase click-through rates, and that alone is enough to justify trying to encourage your customers to leave a review.

Google reviews is definitely a ranking factor. But only one among a lot of other factors. Google reviews on a poorly optimized profile is not going to help you. As a matter of fact some companies with just about 50 reviews outperform companies with 300 or 500 reviews easily because they are well optmized. There are other factors too whcih cannot be contorlled including proximity of the business to the user. But definitely Reviews add to the ranking factor and is an important factor too.
