How big is big enough for a mini niche site?

I'm currently building mini niche sites that are all related to my main business of fitness. Each mini site I've done some pretty good research on keywords for and for each one I have anywhere from 15-50 keywords that I will use for articles and videos.

For the keyword groups that I've found 40+ keywords for, should I split those into 2 different mini websites? Both will have relatively the same type of content but each article will focus on different keywords. I feel this will help diversify the content on each mini site instead of repeating topics with similar keywords on the same site. Also I can gain a little SERP power by linking each of the sites together and using more keywords in the main domains.

How small should a mini site be? Will 20 articles each site work or should I aim at getting 40-50 articles per site? All of my sites direct the readers to my various newsletters where I do the majority of my selling. Im just trying to build stronger search engine power with the mini sites instead of having all my material on 1 large site.

I would think that the more pages of content all focusing on the same niche would, over time, position the site as an authority site. Breaking it up into 2 or 3 sites, in my opinion, would actually weaken your SEO efforts.

They are small niches and I can already get them to the top 3 spots pretty easily. Im making my main hub an authority site for tough keywords that I hope to break into over the year or so.

That's what Im referring too though...how big is big enough to not hurt it in the rankings?

Im really thinking of splitting it up because some of the keywords are so similar the articles will just be the same thing over and over again.

For example lets say the keywords are dog training plans, dog training programs, dog training plan, plan for training dogs, programs for training dogs...etc. All those articles will be pretty much the same material. Let's say I have 50 keywords and I have large groups of these duplicate material. One website could be dogtrainingplans.com with content including dog training programs, dog training plan, etc....and the other could be planfortrainingdogs.com with content on programs for training dogs, dog training plan...etc.

And I could link planfortrainingdogs.com articles to my newsletter and to an article of dogtrainingplans.com forming something of a link wheel.
