I use the Google Keyword Tool, the Google Search-Based Keyword Tool, and Google Insights.

However, none of those tools would do me any good without iWork Numbers (Microsoft Excel for Windows users). Spreadsheets are probably my number one keyword research tool. I'd be lost without them.

I still like the paid version of WordTracker. Let's me store all my lists and re-process them at a later date (see which ones are still good)

I try to simplify and use Google's Keyword Tool primarily, as well as Traffic Travis, which I find quite helpful. I feel that many of the Paid tools are overhyped, and they're not really needed 99% of the time.

I agree Market Samurai is a great tool for Market Research but it does cost $150. It is well worth the money but for some starting out, that may not be an option.

I believe they have a 40 day trial through the ThirtyDayChallenge.com site. The whole thirty day challenge teaches you how to use every aspect of the program.

As a free alternative I use Search-based keyword tool
I use the categories on the left to find hot products and the keywords people are typing into Google to buy the products. Then you can minimize it to a specific sub niche.

You can get one of those keywords and retype it into the search bar.

Then you'll get many low competition keywords with high traffic most of the time.

I do that, but instead of using their search bar, I search for more keywords through Market Samurai.

You can check for low competition keywords by typing the keyword of your choice into google.com with quotes.

Anything with competition less than 30,000 is good.

I am another vote for Market Samurai, it is a great tool and all the different aspects of the program are amazing. It does come at a cost though but if you an afford it, it is worth it.

I think at this time, Market Samurai is on top. It lacked some features that Keyword Elite and Micro Niche Finder had, but it now has them too.

For the money you pay, it's well worth it. I use it all the time and the results are great.

Market Samurai and the keyword analysis side of it is actually FREE.

You can download and use that part for free, even though they will send you the odd email every now and then to upgrade. If you only want to use Keyword Analysis, you don't have to upgrade.

I've purchased the full tool, as it's excellent.

It seems a lot of people use Market Samurai and some other tool with it. I would have thought Market Samurai does it all? Why the need to still use another tool? Was does Market Samurai not do that there is still a need to use other tools?

i used the google keyword tool for ideas only and further
research and "dig" to find a low competition keyword phrase
and write a corresponding landing page

Most marketers simply plug the keywords they find from
the keyword tool and advertise them on adwords or write
    articles based on that.

However, to achieve a higher chance of getting sales,
you need to find out the the "intention" behind these keywords.

e.g when a person types in iphone 3gs reviews, he wants to
know how well this product works and how this gadget can
benefit him. if you list the pros and cons of this phone, you will
have build trust with the person, and he is likely to click on your
affiliate link and buy the product.

I guess many internet marketers fails to make money is not
because of poor keyword research, but because they fail to understand the
needs of their target audience and how they think.

I'm sticking with the Free Google keyword tool as well. I paid for 1 month of Wordtracker and though I did like the internal options with sorting lists and looking at the KEI and all in anchor factors it had a lot of incorrect data on some searches which really annoyed me.

In the end it just wasn't worth paying for it and using it even just for one month to sort the keywords together when it really can still be done for free. I advise everyone to go free on just about everything until they have some cash flow coming in to invest on some tools. Using the free tools allows you to learn what you need and then when you start making some money you can reinvest back in your business.
