How long can a site run on auto pilot?

If you create a decent site and get it ranked on the #1 spot in Google how long do your typical sites tend to run on auto pilot before they began to start slouching in traffic?

1 month?
6 months?
1 year?

I've had a site ranking on the first page of Google with no work since August. I'm not in the first spot for my main keyword anymore but I'm still receiving good traffic and if I built a few more links I could get my spot back.

It also depends on your competition, sometimes when you get into a market, you get on top on top pretty easily but once the markets start to attract more competitors, it get tougher to stay on top.

That simple question is not that simple. There are too many factors including competition, backlink, SEO etc....

I have a site that I have ignored for years. It has one page that has been in the top 3 spots on google since 1998. I haven't checked all the pages
Same site product page same postitioning for about the last 5 years.
I really should do something with that site.
The two main keywords have dropped off the map, but that is OK because I no longer have the physical product to sell.

Back before all the google changes the site made about $300 a month with adsense. Now it is lucky to make $25 a month and an occasional physical product sale.
