What blog software to use if not WP

Been reading the disappointing results people are having from hackers, me included, with my WP blogs. Now I am searching for an alternative. Have used Blogger but what else is out there?

Being not so technically minded as most WF members I can't get my mind around the codes that some suggest to put into WP to make it more secure. Although its on my website I can't even get into the file.

Someone knows the answer to this and googling for a solution has not brought the desired results. I think it will help a lot of people to clear up this problem

    Norma,

If you're looking for a new blog platform, I'd head on over to Home - OpenSourceCMS to give a few a try and see if you like the front and back end. This is a great way to see if you really like one before you go to the trouble of installing it.

For the second part of your question, a quick Google turned up some advice from Matt Cutts:

    • Secure your /wp-admin/ directory so only specific IPs have access to it.
    • Make an empty wp-content/plugins/index.html file to hide which plug-ins you're actually running.
    • Subscribe to the WordPress development blog and stay up to date with the latest patches.
    • Delete the version information from your theme's header.php file.
This page: 11 Ways To Secure Your WordPress Blog - Make Tech Easier is also packed full of tips to make your blog more secure.

What comes first in your mind when you say "Blog"?
70% warriors will say "WP". I personally use and recommend WP.

Nothing is 100% secure. Even someone can hack your website.

I suggest, changing file permission for your blog would cut down the possibility for someone to hack your blog.

You don't need to be technical to install script into your
WP site. If I were you I would learn more about WP and
try to make it work, because there is so much more you
can do with WP than any of the other applications.

    Try Movable Type.
    Or Typepad.

WP is #1. After that, check out Expression Engine, Typepad, B2Revolution and even Drupal.

Thanks to all. Guess I will have to learn more about the technical side of WP. Its my challenge for today. I have just deleted a fifth of almost 1000 spam responses to my blog. Ooooohh.

Can't understand why so many men need viagra or why my penis need enlarging. HELP. I am really cheesed off.

Drupal? Wow. She said she wasn't technically inclined... Drupal would be a nightmare for her. Stick with Wordpress, it is hands down the best. Just make certain you follow the already mentioned steps to secure your blog. If you can't do this, then find someone who you trust, keyword being "trust", and have them secure your blog for you.

    Hi,

I installed drupal only to find that the cPanel default version had to be updated.

I went to the drupal home page and downloaded the new version of drupal and installed it.

I couldn't believe it myself because I'm not a techie at all but I did it.

I agree with jpmarketing that it might be difficult however, given a couple of hours of coffee sipping and "doing over" I truly believe that if I can do it anyone could do it.

George Wright P.S. by the way I do like the finished results I've gotten with drupal. Now I have to install it for real and start using it. GW

    Hi Norma,
If you don't want to host your own Wordpress blog, the next best option I recommend is Typepad which is a hosted service. I use it for a couple of my blogs and it's great.

You don't need technical skills to get a blog set up quickly, but it also caters to more advanced users too. Because it's hosted by them there's no worries about hackers, upgrades, backups etc.

You can try it for free then it costs about $7 per month.

    Hi Norma,

I'm looking into blogging software, myself. I've heard a lot of good things about "Joomla (www.joomla.org). They have many cool/useful plug-ins, too. And, of course, it's FREE!

Try googling it and you will find massive info. Lots of tutorials, and it is a 1 click install if done with Fantastico.

You can also get a free account (3 blogs maximum) with "Word Press Direct". It's supposed to be streamline easy.

    Hope this helps,

    Adam

    Hi Norma,
I will be releasing a Security eBook for WP in a little bit. You can secure it 100% from hackers.

The eBook will be straight forward and include screenshots to show you what to do. There will be no fluff or filler..

There are certainly ways to make your WordPress site more secure, but to say 100% secure from hackers sounds like a stretch to me. If you can actually prevent 100% of hackers from getting into a site, then the Pentagon probably wants to hear from you, as they have yet to figure it out.

A good software that I used for several years is Serendipity:
    Serendipity Weblog System

Several years ago I found it much better than wordpress. But meanwhile wordpress has improved much and today I switched my blogs from serendipity to wordpress because of:
    - extensive documentation on wordpress.org
    - better plugin support
    - better theme support

Stay with WordPress - you'll never regret.

One thing to clarify, what do you mean by 'hack'? As I saw your previous post, you mentioned that there's a lot of SPAM.

Em, there's a few program out there to secure your WordPress system. And regarding your SPAM issue, try to install SPAM plugin.

Akismet + Captcha + Moderated Posts is pretty solid at preventing spam.

And don't ever host your blog with free hosting. It will be a nightmare when your site gets taken down because of a few affiliate links. Think of all the SEO you will have to start from scratch on... like backlinks to blogname.providername.com. Those will be useless when you end up having to move it to private hosting anyway.

Best option is wordpress hosted on your own hosting account.

If you're not familiar with technicalities of blog creations etc, I would recommend you stick to WP and get somebody to improve security for you. WP is the easiest platform for blog creations - just use it on your own hosting account.

Have you considered Typepad or Movable Type? They're both popular blogging platforms.

The problem is not with the software. ANYTHING you use where you go to a URL and type in a username and password is suspect to hacking.

What you really need is a team to support you. A group that is so good with WordPress (or whatever platform) that they could practically rewrite it from scratch if they needed to.

I like Joomla, I find wordpress kind of annoying but it all comes down to what you prefer, in Joomla I can move things easily and everything is controlled thro the administrator panel, I love it! the only thing that I don't like is the lack of plugins but usually I do find what I am looking for...I am using Joomla on all of my websites

I wouldn't give up WP myself.. just too good to be ignored. I'd better focus on how to improve the security of it starting with quality web hosting.
