It's not "I'll start the campaign tomorrow."

It's not even "this stock photo looks natural."

The biggest lie marketers tell themselves is this:

"If I just get more eyeballs, I'll get more sales."

Traffic is good. Watching the numbers climb makes you think you're winning. But if the offer stinks, if the message is weak, if the copy misses the nerve... then all you've done is pay for more people to watch you flop.

I've seen campaigns where traffic doubled and sales didn't move. Then we changed one line. Just one. And the whole thing woke up.

Traffic is gas. The message is the spark. No spark, no fire.

So yeah, eyeballs are nice. But only if you give them something worth looking at.

What's the biggest lie you think marketers tell themselves?

Building a site using 100% Artificial Intelligence for pictures and content writing. Thinking you will out-sell others. Using the same strategy to create Kindle books. The Kindle market is flooded with junk that will never get read or result in a sale.

Trying to compete by selling the lowest-priced item on the market. The race to the bottom is filled with a scrap pile of bankrupt companies.

    Thanks max5ty, there are many...

At the top of my list, the lie they buy...the one that gets the newbie marketer to embark on their journey of becoming a marketer is: (and they beLIEve it true)

They believe the COPY that tells them,

"If I did it, you can too."

The new marketer is told (and they beLIEve) there is a plan, a system, a method that they can use because some other person did it that way and all they have to do is DO WHAT I DID, GET MY RESULTS and live happily ever after.

Of the many lies one tells themselves, I think this one is one of the more costly lies to believe.

    Thanks, good subject material.

      Thanks, Gordon.

I had some free time this week, so I thought I'd throw up a few posts and see if anyone cared to comment.

A lot of online marketers are chasing broke people looking for shiny objects. There are some problems with that...

people looking for shiny objects have no loyalty or long-term use for anyone as a marketer.

You know where the money is?

      Boomers.

They're the wealthiest generation in history. They have tons of money and are willing to spend it on the right stuff.

They don't float from shiny object to shiny object.

Once you get them, you have a customer for life.

      They're not refund happy.

But most fly-by-night marketers have no idea how to grab them.

They're a special group that takes talent to entice them. But they'll buy, and they'll keep buying over and over again.

I used to always call my secret the 'third rail'. You have features and benefits...but the third rail is what sparks the buy. It's like the subway; the third rail is what drives the train.

I may do a post in the copywriting section on this today if I get time.

Anyway, thanks for all the feedback

Exactly! Many marketers focus too much on getting more people instead of making their message clear and valuable.

Traffic alone won't bring sales; the right offer and message make all the difference.

    Thanks everyone for the responses.

I did a little test over the last couple days by throwing up a few posts to see if the WF still had any life.

Apparently, it doesn't have much left.

    I have 2 newsletters...

one has about 63,000 subscribers, and the other one has about 348,000 subscribers. My subscribers are always excited for new info.

    I don't think I'll post here anymore.

There just doesn't seem to be an interest around here anymore for learning much or debating things.

Good luck to everyone and everything you're trying to accomplish!

        Oh my.

        You and Alex.

        He didn't like me either.

One of those people who hold a grudge forever, haha.

Maybe I was being a little harsh. It just seems the last couple of years, it's been the same 4 or 5 people talking to each other.

I wish the WF would get back to what it was.

I see people stop by who say they haven't been by in a while...

ok, what do you want to post that you can share?

Anyway, I always love your word choices when you post. Don't always understand them...and for being a boomer, sometimes it takes a few reads to comprehend haha.

Can't argue. I'm here "as time allows".

After all work, chores, and entertainment are done, THEN, a stop by WF. Hardly ever see much worth responding to, sometimes post just to hear my own voice.

What I find most disheartening is the number of first time or newer posters who disappear and never bother with follow up questions or comments. Maybe they are bots or trolls, whatever.

As for interesting ideas, it would be nice, if before you leave for good, to give us a little insight into building those NEWSLETTER lists...you've spoken in the past re newsletters, I would want to know, if you care to answer:

Who hosts (if a platform) your newsletters and how are they distributed (assuming email) and how often and how much interaction do you have with your subscribers?.

I have appreciated you being here, sharing and this place will be even dimmer without you, and it might not YET be lights out, it may not be far away.

I'll keep my little candle lit but I do get your reasons.

      GordonJ

I think another big lie is: "I'll do everything myself." Marketing looks easy from the outside, but trying to run every channel alone usually kills the results.

the main point is that; focus on message and offer, not just the traffic. and it is totally correct....
traffic is only work when message is great. we see how one great line can change the whole performance of campaign.
