Anti - Facebook Marketing or not?

So by the title of this post, you're assuming that I'm going to be ragging on Facebook. As opposed to giving Facebook a totally negative review, I wanted to provide you with both things I like about marketing with Facebook along with reasons why I don't like marketing with Facebook. In the end, Ill leave the decision up to you.

Seven reasons why I like marketing on Facebook:

1. It's the second most popular site in the world (next to Google)
2. Facebook Ads allows you to do some very targeted pay per click marketing
3. Fan Pages are a great place to market your business, products and services
4. It keeps getting bigger and getting more traffic (also can be seen as a negative)
5. Tricking out your profile is easy to do
6. It can be updated with ease using a mobile device
7. You can finally secure facebook.com/yourname! (unless someone grabbed it and wants to sell it to you now)

Six Reasons why I don't like marketing on facebook:

1. They like to ban accounts and provide little information as to WHY it happened. This could put you out of the Facebook marketing business overnight.
2. It's becoming over populated -- this turns a lot of people off
3. Way to many crazy applications (I'm sick of seeing who poked me, hugged me, tried to get me into their mafia clan or listed me as their top friends) it's just weird
4. Personal Facebook profiles are very difficult to monetize
5. Limitations on the number of friends you can have
6. Strange data ownership clauses -- do you own your data or not? Make up your mind Facebook!
7. I can't send out emails to my friends

All in all, I do use Facebook as one of my online marketing tools, but I do not use the site exclusively. I encourage you to check out additional social marketing sites that can be used to drive traffic, leads and sales.

    1. They like to ban accounts and provide little information as to WHY it happened. This could put you out of the Facebook marketing business overnight.

    - That is because you use it to market to people that do not like to be marketed to. It is a social network after all...

    2. It's becoming over populated -- this turns a lot of people off

    - Really confused by this, it's a social network and not a marketing platform..

    3. Way to many crazy applications (I'm sick of seeing who poked me, hugged me, tried to get me into their mafia clan or listed me as their top friends) it's just weird

    - Again because it is a social network, people are not there to buy your marketing stuff.. They are there to socialize with friends, family, and like minded people. Maybe you should try adding "targeted" people instead of adding every tom, dick, and harry as your friend.

    4. Personal Facebook profiles are very difficult to monetize

    - Again because it is a social network, it is not meant to be your marketing platform.

    5. Limitations on the number of friends you can have

    - Who wants a bunch of unrelated friends ? Mass adding them is not going to help you market a product or service...

    7. I can't send out emails to my friends

    - It's not an opt-in list, it's a social network that does not wanting you to spam everybody you can add as a friend with some mass adding tool.

With all that said .. you can use facebook profiles and friends to make money. You just have to know how to do it properly and part of that comes down to "socializing" ...

Did I mention it is a social network ...

I don't think that facebook is a good place for making sales. Maybe just for a brand awareness.

I like the branding awareness and the social implication. This is one strategy I use facebook to bring in more business.

I consulted a client who is in the make up business, I told her engage your students in facebook, once they practice at home, ask them to post on their photos and you give constructive comments.

Results was great, when the girls post their pics, their friends commented, liked and some even wanted to be part of the make up academy. Result, students get more out of the make up academy by their free coaching and in return, free publicity for the make up academy which generate into sales.

Use social media to sell socially and subtly, people hate to be sold no matter where or which platform.

I am an avid Facebook user - I love using Facebook to keep in touch with my family and friends. However, as far as marketing goes, Facebook users would probably need a more subtle approach.

I personally do not pay attention to most of the ads on Facebook. I am on the site to socialize. I do, however, have certain interests there. For example, I write poetry and have many poet friends there. Creating fan pages and groups among friends seems to be a pretty good way to get your work noticed. So perhaps focusing on certain groups and niches may work better for marketing purposes.

Facebook might not be for marketing because it is a social site. Someone better tell Mari Smith about that because she doesn't believe me :-)
But seriously, used properly any social site can be used for marketing just like if done correctly any social bar-b-que can, in the long run be used for marketing too. Just carefully.
If a friend of yours, who you trusted sold real-estate would you go to a stranger? If you wanted to buy a car, would you go to a friend who sold cars or a stranger?
Social Media is like the physical world, treat it as such. You would not go to a bar-b-que for the first invite and try to sell a vacuum cleaner, so don't do it in Facebook.
