Veteran bloggers, do you notice a decline in visitor comments?

This question is directed at those of you who have been blogging for a decade or longer.

I remember in the past when I experienced more traffic spikes, I'd notice an increase in comments left as well.
I get it, I know social shares are important too, but comments are even better in my opinion. They demonstrate feedback. They tell you if you're doing your job as a marketer, or there are gaps that need to be filled.

The most comments I ever got on my blog was a total of 10 in June 2023. That wasn't a long time ago. Plus, I enjoy reading other people's in remarks. Other than the occasional rude person, they can be fun to read and respond to.

Yeah, I.notice this as well. My niche does very well on Pinterest, for example. And a lot of "pinners" are having mini -convos too.

YouTube is one platform that remains highly conversational. I come for the content, but stay for the comments. which are sometimes just as enjoyable to as the videos

As a blog reader, I'd say this: I'm not really avoiding comments, it's just that I rarely have anything to add to the discussion. Often everything has already been said, or the conversation goes a bit in a direction I'm not that interested in. So most of the time I just read silently as a reader

Yeah, one of my posts in particular has close to 50 comments total (including some of my responses.) but that is probably why discussions on that one gave petered out. Everything to be asked has already been asked

I really related to this, comments feel more real than traffic. Even a few meaningful ones matter more than many visits.

As mentioned by others, social media has eclipsed the whole world of blogs it seems. I miss the olden days of plain old message boards like this. Especially the ones which weren't so heavily moderated by every little comment/request.

I also want to point out that some blogs I've visited are not even set up for leaving comments. I don't know if they just don't want to deal with spammers ( that's an easy fix with plugins) Or maybe they don't have the time.

I couldn't agree more. Feedback is the best way to know if your content is actually landing. It's a shame that the 'commenting culture' has slowed down over the years, because those interactions are usually where the best insights happen!

Absolutely true, they add another layer of insight!

One small exception, I'd add, is the backlink-seekers....you can spot those by the usually terse remark, ("great post thanks") and website link ( is it in your niche, but not a quality website)

I've noticed this too, even in some small blogs. It's not the case that increased traffic leads to an increase in comments.

It seems that people prefer just to read without commenting or maybe participate on some other platform rather than make a comment on the blog itself.

Comments have certainly become less popular nowadays.

Yes, blogging slowly dying. I think the biggest hit was after Google introduced AI overviews. The community is getting smaller and smaller on all the blogs that I manage

It's definitely harder to get them now than it was 10 years ago, so definitely celebrate those 10 comments. They mean you're striking the right chord with your readers.

  • Seems the collaborative "Hey, C'mon" community continues to reel from the fantasy clampdown spillin' out from Gamergate (& its supplicants).

Plus also, alla them platforms now monetizes what was initially pseudo-free.

Just means significant voices & proclaimo happnin' elseplace, I guess.

    Foller the holler ...
